Highlander: The Raven: 'Dead on Arrival'

When the sister of Tom Ross approaches Amanda for help, Nick is dragged into a hunt for Tom that brings him in the way of the plans of Peyton, a self-styled Immortal magician.

Note: major spoilers ahead. In the finale of The Raven, Amanda and Nick take on a particularly clever Immortal, who actually gives them a run for their money. However, despite the stronger characterization present here, there doesn't appear to be much story behind it all.

Nick spends his time getting beaten up and staggering about, once infected by a poison Peyton gives him, and Amanda tries to stay out of the way. There are also some really stupid moments from the main characters. If you're trying to do Peyton out of his money, why let him see the accomplice he has never seen before walking out of a bank with a case? The second he sees her, you know she's about to be captured. On top of this, Amanda says Peyton's been around for about 800 years, yet in the flashback sequence, it's only the 1600's and Peyton's first death is a year prior to that.

Finally, there's the 'stunning' end revelation that Nick's an Immortal. The main problem with this is that Amanda says she's known since they first met. If so, why has she spent so long protecting him from dying? And why doesn't she kill him earlier than she does in this episode? Isn't it rather vindictive to let Nick suffer for hours before putting him out of his misery?

On the plus side, it does lead to a pperfectly written final scene, when Nick tells Amanda just what he thinks of her 'gift' of immortality. And he's got one hell of a point. Should the series ever return (and it seems unlikely), following this new dynamic could make the Amanda/Nick relationship a lot more interesting. And that last scene gets it a bonus star.
