The Return of the Oscars

- Well, we here at Starfly's Planet wattched the Oscars on Sunday night (Timely with the news, aren't I?). As a big Lord of the Rings fan, I say "BOO YAH" to the 11 award sweep that Jackson and his band of unwashed miscreants came off with. I think its a real great thing for the Fantasy/Sci-fi Genre as a whole. I can't say how many times I've seen some artsy(crappy) film take away honors that belonged to better movies. But now an adventure of four little hobbits has the gold.

I can't say I enjoyed every pick of the Oscars. Sean Penn got a standing ovation? This is the same guy that was smacking himself with a shoe in Fast Time at Ridgemont High. Oy, I was rooting for Johnny Depp even if I don't think Pirates of the Carribean really was an "Academy Worthy" film.

My main fear coming off these awards is the probability that we're going to get bombarded by a sea of horrible, horrible fantasy films now. (And don't say that's not possible, anyone else see Dungeons and Dragons?) I mean, Spider-man cleaned up at the box office and then it was super-fest at the theartre. That's festival of spandex isn't even over yet. I just fear that a genre I love is going to be raped by Hollywood as so many other genres are. Maybe we'll at least get a few good films in the process at least.

Here's to hoping for the best.

Other Pieces of News
New Zealand=Fantasy Land
- That's right folks, another fantasy ffilm coming from New Zealand. This time we go to a magical world called Narnia in CS Lewis' The Chronicles of Narnia. Disney is footing the money for this special endeavor, let's just hope that instead of a talking lion we don't have Mickey Mouse. Talking Lions=ROCK. Talking Mice=NOT ROCK. In all hope this will be a good movie. It's being directed by the same guy that directed Shrek. At least he's got fantasy-ish experience, right?

The King Vs the Ring
- Witty title, no?

All right, The Passion of the Christ has been hitting a lot of bad press and a lot of good press. It just depends on who you're asking. I haven't seen it yet, but when I do you can expect me to say something. I will note, however, that The Passion of the Christ has beaten Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King for 5-day box office openings. I think that's just excellent. Both movies have done very well. And guess what? BOTH MOVIES WERE CHRISTIAN! MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH! Yeah, Tolkien's was less directly Christian and more metaphorical but it had very specific Christian qualities that made it rock so well. Passion's Christian examples are a given.

Some People Are Just Plain Stupid
- Okay...I read something thinking it hhad to be being blown out of proportion, and perhaps it is, but 21% of people 18-29 get their news from "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" instead of an actual news agency. Now...come on...that's like eating a burrito with your eye. IT'S JUST REALLY STUPID! Duh. The Daily Show, the fine program it is, is a parody. That's comedy. Not real. Noooooot reeeeeeeeeeal. Fake. FAKE NEWS SHOW. Got it?

Well, it's been a while since I did a News Update. I hope to be updating more frequently from now on. I mostly chose to do an update thanks to the Return of the King awards and my genre fears. Tune in next week when we see what 200 volts of electricity does to a pop-tart.
