The X-Files Book of the Unexplained Volume I The X-Files Book of the Unexplained Volume II by Jane Goldman
If you watch The X-Files thinking that it's just a show and can't really happen, these two books may surprise you. An in-depth and well researched look at some of the alleged real life events that have inspired episodes of The X-Files, contains chapters on UFOs and aliens, human oddities, psychics, ghosts, weird nature, unknown creatures, government conspiracies, artificial intelligence, genetic engineering, Voodoo, vampires, serial killers, ancient mysteries, and much more. A must read for any X-Phile who wonders where the writers get their ideas from.
The Science of The X-Files by Jeanne Cavelos
Jeanne Cavelos feels that "The X-Files is actually the television drama most concerned with science
today, incorporating recent discoveries and exploring the limits and values of science." Cavelos's guide to
the science behind the stories can be a little confusing if you're not an X-phile (it could use a glossary),
but it is a treasure-trove of gross science facts you'll enjoy even if you've never seen the show. Disturbing
birth defects, parasitic worms that come out of your eyes, killer fungi, cockroaches in serried
ranks--whatever makes you go "Ewww," it's probably in here. Besides these monster-of-the-week
topics, Cavelos gives a scientific background to the X-Files mythology: the web of aliens (gray, black oil,
shape-shifting, whatever), hybrids, abductions, government cover-ups, and the looming figure of the
Cigarette-Smoking Man. Whether you are a wide-eyed, broad-minded (gullible?) Mulder or a skeptical,
rationalist, cold-water-throwing Scully, this book has an insight, a silly story, or a good quote for you.
Novels: The X-Files: Goblins by Charles Grant
The throats of army officers at Fort Dix are being slit by trees that have "grown" arms and legs. Mulder and Scully must determine whether there are supernatural forces at work, or if it is the result of a ghastly human plan.
The X-Files: Whirlwind by Charles Grant
Serial killers come in all shapes and sizes, but this one is particularly puzzling. There's no pattern to the mutilated bodies that have been showing up in Albuquerque: both sexes, all races, ages, ethnic groups. There is no evidence of rape or ritual. Only one thing connects the victims. They were the victims of a natural disaster. One of the most unnatural natural disasters imaginable, leading to a most painful, most certain and most hideous death....

The X-Files: Ground Zero by Kevin J. Anderson
When renowned nuclear weapons researcher Dr. Gregory is found dead in his lab, charred to a radioactive cinder, Mulder and Scully are called in. Now they will rip the lid off Dr. Gregory's illegal project--a new type of flash nuclear explosive that has all the destructive power of the Hiroshima atomic bomb, but with an innovative design that leaves virtually no radioactive fallout. Original.

The X-Files: Antibodies by Kevin J. Anderson
When a disease-ravaged body is found in the smoldering ruins of the federally funded DyMar genetic research lab, Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully fear that a deadly, man-made plague is on the loose. As the FBI agents investigating the "X-Files" cases the bureau has deemed unsolvable Mulder and Scully pursue the truth wherever it leads, even into the labyrinthine corridors of the FBI... and beyond.

The X-Files: Fight the Future by Chris Carter (The novelization of the movie)
Beneath the tranquil surface of a North Texas town, the future of the human race waits.
After forty years, members of the global conspiracy known only as The Project are finally nearing the completion of their plans. Only FBI Special Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully have a glimpse of the nightmare that lies ahead for the rest of the world: an alien invasion fueled by the most devastating virus in human history.
And only they know that the Truth isn't out there anymore--
It's already here.

If you're interested in my opinions of these novels, here are my thoughts. Charles Grant's novels are pretty silly and in my opinion don't capture the feel of the series or the characters. They can still make an adequate read if you love The X-Files that much (Goblins is the worst, Whirlwind is better). Kevin J. Anderson's three novels are all great and do a much better job of capturing the show's feel, I definately receomend you check them out. Fight the Future is pretty much the same as the movie, so if you're the kind of person who can read a novelization of a feature film you may enjoy it but you might want to avoid it if you don't. But it does expand a little (particularly by giving more information on what happened to Samantha) which might make it of interest.
