The Tragedy of War

It was a beautiful spring day in the town of Oak Grove. Birds were laughing and playing. Everyone was happy, everyone except Brian. Brian was very sad. He just learned that his father had been shot and killed by the enemy during the war. This was a war that had lasted three years, since the year 2000.

Brian was a man of average height. He had blond hair and blue eyes. He was twenty-five years old. Brian was not the kind of person who gets emotional, but that news made him sad and angry. Angry at the enemy, angry at the government for starting the war, angry at everyone. Brian was not the kind of person who got angry, either. This was a change, a change that Alice, his fiancee, even noticed.

One day when Brian got home, Alice was waiting for him. Alice didn't look too happy and Brian wondered what was wrong.

"What's wrong Alice?" Brian asked.

"Here, look," Alice said, giving Brian the letter.

The letter was from the government. It said that they requested Alice's help as a doctor near the battle field. The letter went on to tell all the specifics.

When Brian finished reading the letter he got very mad. He started yelling and swearing and running around the house. It took him about five minutes to cool down.

Alice said, "Brian, what happened? You've never acted like this before."

"I'm just so mad because first they send my father over there, and you know what happened to him. Now they want you to go over there. What if the same thing happens to you that happened to my dad?" Brian answered.

"I'll be all right, I promise," Alice said.

"I hope you're right," said Brian.

A couple of weeks later, after Alice left, there was a protest over by the city hall against the war. Brian decided to go because he hated the war so much.

There were about twenty people protesting that day. Most of them had friends or relatives on the battlefield. Others were veterans from previous wars, and knew how awful war was.

The protesters were doing just fine until the police came. Then there was trouble. People refused to leave and started throwing things at the police. Then the police started throwing things back at them. While this was going on, a big rock hit Brian on the head and he fell down unconscious.

When Brian woke up, he was in the hospital. He had a minor concussion and could go home in a few days. Brian had never felt so bad in his life.

The weeks passed by and Brian got lonelier and lonelier. Finally, one day he got a letter. It was from the government. Brian's biggest fears became reality. Alice was dead. The enemy had bombed the hospital where she was working and there weren't any survivors. Brian was so sad, he sat down and cried for hours.

As the days passed, Brian became sullen. He stayed home as much as possible and started feeling worthless. He started thinking about death. How no one would miss him and he'd be with those he loved.

One day he decided to kill himself, and started to think of how. He didn't want something that was too messy. It had to be something the neighbors wouldn't suspect. He decided to overdose on asprin.

The next day at 4:00 he took twenty asprins and went to bed, thinking that he would die there. At 6:00 a neighbor came over and found him. The neighbor dialed 911. The paramedics came and rushed him to the hospital. By then it was too late. They put him on a machine, but a few days later they decided he had just given up. They unhooked him from the machine and let him die the way he wanted.

The End
