Unlike almost every other city in north Erythria Darhan is not a port city. Whilst the vast majority of the great cities set up during the northmen push have long since been reduced to ruins by the resurgence of the plainsmen Darhan survives. The reason for its survival lies not in its walls (which are wooden and built less than ten years ago) nor in its population (which numbers barely 7000 and is not a warlike one) but in its position. Darhan nestles at the heart of the Great Forest of Darhan, astride the mighty river Comsak. It is a day's journey at the least from the margins of the forest to the gates of Darhan and plainsmen have deep suspicions of forests, suspicions bred into them over generations of unfortunate encounters with elves no doubt.
The majority of Darhan's people are followers of Morana and traditionally a Great Hunter has ruled the city in Morana's name. The forest has always protected and nourished the Darhanites and in the Battle of Darhan (AE 907) it was the forest itself that broke the back of Hesterus' invading army.
A coup nearly ten years ago resulted in the end (or interruption) of the rule of the Great Hunters when Malai was deposed by Nabrax - a servant of Haquar, the city's second biggestfaith. Nabrax has been dictator of Darhan for many years now and saw the city through the Battle of Darhan and more recent threats of insurrection. The replacement of the old Morana priest and the high priestess of Haquar has led to a more cooperative attitude between these key faiths.
In happier times there was plenty of trade down the Comsak with Cursiter. Darhan being a producer of timber (obviously), fine carvings, longbows, charcoal and skins. Now this trade has been replaced by trade with Bisha to the east and Tulak to the west. The overheads on caravans are dear though and Darhan has been far poorer since Cursiter fell to Hesterus.
