FACT FILE: F-3 Piranha
The
The smallest and most maneuverable Strategic aerospace craft fielded by
the SFMC, the Piranha is only slightly larger than a standard probe. This
allows it to be deployed rapidly (and in large numbers) via a photon torpedo
launcher, then recovered later through the shuttle bay. For this reason,
the F-3 is commonly used by smaller Federation vessels who want a fighter
capability, but do not have the space for larger dedicated fighter launch
and recovery facilities. The Piranha is not well armored and is equipped
with a minimum of defensive countermeasures. Pilots rely on its speed and
maneuverability to stay alive in a fight. Its incredible agility was best
demonstrated by former Fleet Captain David Moreau, at that time head of
the F-3 design and development project. His simulated attack run on Admiral
K'rell's diplomatic cruiser, complete with what he called the "maximum
thrust U-turn between the warp nacelles" has been shown repeatedly
during training of F3 pilots. The new head of the F3 project announced
the completion of the Piranha's test trials the next day, and the F-3 went
into Federation service as the standard light strategic fighter.

The Equipment Rating System
The preceeding descriptions of aerospace craft use a rating
system, rather than precise numbers. This is to simplify the factsheets,
and to make it easier to understand how each specific aerospace craft compares
to others. A value of zero (0) means none, while a value of 1 means minimal
and 10 means maximum within a given statistic.
