LARP
"Belly of the Beast"
Thanks to Everyone at Rudicon!
I ran Star Wars LARP "Belly of the Beast" at
Rudicon in
Rochester, New York from October 23-25. The LARP ran from Friday
8pm-midnight and then again from Saturday 9pm- Sunday 1am. We had a great bunch of players for
this first running of "Belly of the Beast". The players were some of
the best LARP players I've ever encountered. They helped to make "Belly of
the Beast" one of the best LARPs I've ever seen. Thanks again to everyone: players and
staff.
Belly of the Beast Background
Cirrus City
Overview
Cirrus City is located on a large gas giant in the Gareena System. It floats above the
clouds of the planet similar to the Cloud City of Bespin, seen in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes
Back. The main purpose of Cirrus City is to mine the various gases of the planet and also to
serve as a production facility for various refined gas products. A tertiary funtion of the
city is that of spaceport: Cirrus City is located along a rarely used spacelane, but is the only
spaceport along one leg of the spacelane and is thus frequented by nearly every ship that plies
this area of the galaxy.
The Gareenan people have maintained some autonomy and have always had an indiginous
Imperial Governor. However, Cirrus City has always attracted more Imperial attention due to
its strategic location along a spacelane and its large production capacity. Consequently,
Cirrus City has always had a City Administrator that was not as loyal to the Gareenans as to
the Empire.
While Cirrus City is a free city, all industrial production and mining is performed by
Hortek Chartered Gas Mining, Ltd. The corporation makes millions of credits from this
operation and has always treated Cirrus City as the cash cow that it is. In other words, if
it's not broken, don't fix it.
Because of the remote location of Cirrus City from the Empire and even the central
Gareenan government, the criminal underworld has always flourished here. There are sometimes
brief "turf wars," but usually one crime lord is powerful enough to guarantee relative peace
and quiet, along with a steady supply of black market goods.
The unique status in Galactic and Gareenan society that is afforded to Cirrus City has
always made the citizens feel a bit privileged and a little independent.
Architecture
Cirrus City is a huge floating city similar to Cloud City of Bespin, seen in Star Wars: The
Empire Strikes Back. The major sections of the city from top to bottow are as follows:
- Top Deck: a large level that contains many tall structures and the most important buidlings
- Upper City: a number of levels that are larger than Top Deck and contain the bulk of the living quarters
- Docking Ring: a number of levels that contain many docking bays for use by Hortek's bulk freighters
- Lower City: the receiving, processing, refining, manufacturing, and power generation levels
- Flotation Disc: lowest level of the city, houses the machinery that provides the anti-gravity that allows the city to float
Points of Interest
- 1. City Administrator Office & Security Barracks
- This building contains the offices of the City Administrator and staff. It also serves
as the barracks for the the city's small security force.
- 2. Hortek Chartered Gas Mining, Ltd. City Headquarters
- This towering dome contains the local corporate offices as well as the living quarters for
the officers of Hortek Chartered Gas Mining, Ltd. A small corporate security force is housed
here as well.
- 3. Lucky 23 Casino
- This lavish building is owned by local businessperson Norin Nordeen who can usually be found
here among the crowds of spacers looking to get rich quick. "The Lucky" never closes and is
widely known for its sabacc tables.
- 4. Mundo's Repair Shop
- Mundo Daga runs this modest repair facility and also trades in vehicles
and droids. Mundo keeps odd hours and the repair facility is just as likely to be closed as open.
A large stock of vehicles and spare parts is located here.
- 5. Docking Bay 3018
- As docking bays go, 3018 is one of the best. It services the central district of the Top
Deck and thus claims many of the richest citizens and visitors of Cirrus City as customers.
Falor Nock, the owner, does most of the repairs personally. Even though 3018 has a prime
location, the rates for docking, repairs, provisions, and storage are comparable to other
docking bays on the Top Deck.
- 6. Security Office
- "The Brig" is one of the newest buildings on the Top Deck. It was built just a few years ago
by the Empire and is rumored to contain some of the most expensive holding cells in the
galaxy. While the Cirrus City Security Force (CCSF) has barracks elsewhere, their offices are
located within the protective walls of "The Brig."
- 7. Spacers' Den (Cantina)
- Live entertainment, fine food and drink, and a wide array of patrons are the only things
that are a constant at the Spacers' Den. The path from the Security Office to the front door
of this building is well worn. This is the wildest place on Cirrus City and the management
promotes it as such. Droids are not permitted inside the cantina, but a small room with an
outside entrance is provided to shelter those droids awaiting their masters. It contains power
sockets for use by the droids at a reasonable rate.
- 8. Cirrus City Trading Post
- Anything that is legal within the limits of Cirrus City can be bought here, for a price.
The owner, Magus Gortas, is known to be able to find event the rarest item. Common items are
stocked and available at reasonable prices.
- 9. Dr. Fariq's Office (Medical Services)
- "Full Medical Services Provided--No Questions Asked" reads the sign above Dr. Fariq's office.
Fariq is a skilled surgeon and is assisted by a first class medical droid. Fariq can provide
the use of any of several on site bacta tanks.
- 10. Gareenan National Museum Branch
- The Gareenan are proud people and maintain a branch of their national museum on the Top Deck.
It contains important cultural or historical artifacts. It also possesses a top-notch
communications center for research.
