Monsters of the Moon #3

SUMMARY

The Magellan launched successfully and headed for the moon. There were a few minor navigational problems, but the flight and landing went smoothly. Once on the surface, the crew gathered data and samples. One interesting piece of "rock" was located on the slope of a nearby hill. It was completely black and one side of the "rock" was flat and smooth.

The "rock" was taken back to the ship for analysis and was found to reflect all radiation on the smooth side. Several tests were performed on the sample and nothing was found that could break the "rock." Finally, an "electron gun" was created to break the surface and a tiny hole on the smoth side was created. At that point, various types of radiation could then be passed through that hole in the smooth side of the "rock."

Any investigation was suspended as a large "flying saucer" approached the Magellan. Captain Williams radioed the the "saucer" for identification, but it continued to approach and did not respond. Williams ordered that the Magellan fire upon UFO, but the explosive missiles had no effect.

The UFO landed close to the Magellan and Williams led a team to investigate. Once in close range of the UFO, the team could see that the craft was built from material similar to the "rock" that they had discovered. The craft was seamless but somehow a doorway was made to appear and the team saw the craft open and a human in a space suit emerge and motion for the team to enter the craft. Once inside, the team was quickly subdued by hideous aliens who were, apparently, using the other human as bait. The team managed to escape with the other human, but Grady was injured in the attempt. His wounds were not serious, but his space suit was damaged. The team successfully returned to the Magellan and immediately launched from the surface, leaving the crew's robot "M.I.T.C.H." standed on the moon.

After some debate, the crew decided to risk a pick up of "M.I.T.C.H." Although it is not sentient, the crew had become emotionally attached to the robot and often used the personal pronoun "him" to refer to the robot. The risky rescue of "M.I.T.C.H." was successful and Captain Williams prepared the ship for an attack run against the UFO.

Professor Jade Taylor and Professor Laurel Thorton managed to rig one of the atomic missiles with the "rock" they had been studying. It was hoped that the missile would be able to penetrate or dent the surface of the UFO and then the atomic warhead would detonate and exploit the structural flaw. The plan went off without a hitch, but the UFO was untouched.

A small cloud of moon dust was created by the nuclear explosion and the Magellan was first struck by a heavy dose of radiation and then the tiny moon particles. The ship's rockets were damaged and the rocket engineer Warner, volunteered to repair the damage during a space walk. There was still a great deal of debris orbiting the moon and the Magellan was unable to escape orbit. During the space walk, Warner was injured by some debris, but managed to repair the damage. He was rescued and brought to the sick bay immediately. Captain Williams order the ship to return home, both to get Warner to better facilities more quickly, and to provide the ship's surgeon with a 1g environment in which to perform surgery.

EPILOGUE

The crew managed to disengage with the UFO and was returning safely to Earth when the next adventure began.
