A mystery--- my favorite! The X-Files has drawn fans of different genres together: horror, thrillers, science fiction, UFOs, government conspiracies, and, yes, mysteries. I was attracted to the show because of my love of science fiction and mysteries. I love Agatha Christie and read most (if not all) of her novels in high school. I, also, love science fiction- Arthur C. Clarke, Ray Bradbury, etc. (but that is another episode) Let’s look at the wonderful mystery of The Amazing Maleeni.
I loved that I didn’t know what was truly going on until the end. I knew LaBonge (sp?) was up to no good, but I wasn’t sure how Pinchbeck fit into the puzzle. And I certainly didn’t figure out that they were really wanting to get Mulder’s badge number and fingerprint to do an electronic Funds Transfer. A little technological hocus pocus to complement the sleight of hand. Bravo to John, Frank, and Vince for non expeditious, intriguing, and thoroughly entertaining writing!
I, also, appreciated that we weren’t
told how they did they main magic tricks. I didn’t watch the masked magician
to find out how magicians do the tricks; I don’t want to know.
Magic is so fascinating. I was never any good at it, though I tried so hard. As a kid, I loved watching magicians on TV. My favorite was Doug Henning. In my book, he beat David Copperfield hands down! Doug made all of his tricks seem so simple and he did it with grace and simplicity. My favorites were his card tricks. He did amazing things with everyday playing cards. It just blew my mind!
We saw the return of Craddock Marine
Bank, previously seen in Monday last season. Thankfully, Mulder
and Scully’s time in this branch of the bank ended much nicer. We, also,
were treated to someone else mistaking our agents as "“Mr. and Mrs." and
a "“No Riders" sign in the front window of the armored van. The Mozart
and Salieri reference got my attention. I loved “Amadeus!” It’s the little
things that I enjoy...
My love of a good mystery and of magic really made “The Amazing Maleeni a favorite. No deep thoughts or illuminating observations this time, just applause for a great story!
Now, if you want to do a little research, I pulled these out of my magic hat:
