A Quick History of Lassane
The Creation of the World
A long time ago, there was a great Wyrm. The Wyrm died, and from its body sprang the world Lassane, and all the creatures that inhabited it. The gods were born, and they lived in harmony with the world. The Elder races flourished and prospered in Isian. Progress in magic and technology allow for an unending Renaissance era, and for centuries the world is at peace.
The War of the Gods
Eventually, the gods begin to quarrel among themselves about which was the greatest. They tested each other, first with small games, then with battles, and finally with all-out war. Soon, the entire planet had been dragged into the War, with Elder race pitted against Elder. The fighting went on for centuries, until finally only two gods were left: Kana, goddess of Darkness and Chaos, and her twin sister Karla, goddess of Light and Order.
On Isian's western coast, the two sisters fought for the last time. After seven days of fierce combat, Karla finally cast down her dark twin. Kana, with her last breath, cursed the land to die. Where she died, a great tree rose up. Kana's followers, the brutish Kur'Grath, had fled to the Western Isles.
Wounded Karla tried to undo the curse, but her efforts were in vain. In despair, she fled Isian, never to be seen again.
The Fall of the Elders and the Rise of Humans
Several years later the first "dead zone" (an area or location where magic no longer works) appears in northern Lance, destroying all magic-dependent life and profoundly altering the geography there. Soon, more and more dead zones appear. As they spread across the continent, the Elder races withdrew, finally disappearing all together, and leaving much of their now-dead technology behind them.
Humans, the last born of the Elder races and therefore the most resistant to the dead zones, quickly spread their influence across Isian. They created kingdoms and spent years rebuilding old cities. Some humans even learned to utilize magic of a sorts. After nearly three hundred years, humans rule Isian and the Elders are the things of legends, saved from total obscurity by the presence of half-breeds: rare humans whose ancestors have crossbred with the Elders.
Seven kingdoms rose from the ashes: Pannet, Hewnon, and Gimas in the north. Walere, Tunes, Sarther, and Theodrin in the south.
The Present Age, The Twin Paths of Light and Darkness:
Almost a millennium after the War of the Gods, two religious factions have appeared in Isian: The Cult of the Tree and the Bringers of Light. Based in the Holy City Maun, The Bringers of Light worship the goddess Karla, believing that she will return one day to guide her faithful to paradise. The Cult of the Tree is located in Theodrin, where Kana died. Her followers believe that she will one day rise again to exact revenge on Isian. The two religions have battled for years, and now it seems that a full-blown war isn't far behind.
