Anita never seems to get a vacation. In the latest installment of the series there is a contract out on Anita's life, it ends up she is worth half a million dollars. And, that is only an inconvenience compared to some of the other problems Anita has. First, Anita camps out at Richard's house to escape from the assassins but after spending the day with him and pack business Anita is actually looking forward to her date with Jean-Claude.
Jean-Claude and she are attending the opening of his new club Danse Macabre (this is the only novel so far in the Anita series that is not named after a restaurant that is because LKH could not get the rights to use Danse Macabre since one of Stephen King's books already has that name) when the second assassin strikes. Even with Edward there to guard her things are not looking up when she has to kill the assassin.
Dolph manages to help her get out of going in for questioning till later by needing her expertise at a murder scene. It ends up being Robert who was murdered, the annoying vampire that works for Jean-Claude and who married Monica Vespucci. But it's not the fact that Robert was murdered rather the way it was done that particularily bugs Anita. We are also introduced to a new character and member of the Spook Squad, Detective Reynolds. The first out of the closet witch on a police force. She and Anita don't hit it off to well, but then Anita is a little distracted defending her honor to Dolph since he disapproves of her dating Jean-Claude.
Then there is a vampire in town who is literally a rotting corpse yet still alive and it isn't one of his talents. His name is Sabin and he thinks Anita will be able to cure him, although Anita isn't so sure of herself. He got his unique condition by not feeding on humans anymore and that alone is a fascinating, new fact we have learned about Hamilton's world.
Finally, this novel is the conclusion of the second trilogy in this series. The question is finally answered whether it will be Jean-Claude or Richard in what is being refered to by some fans as Notorious 39. Please don't read my BURNT OFFERINGS review until you have read this book because if you have not I do not want to spoil it for you. This book is wonderful and one of the best in the series in my opinion.
