20. "The Prom"

Angel is feeling especially guilty about being around Buffy now. He's had some time to think and he feels that since he can't truly be with, grow old with her, ect. he should leave. Of course, he breaks up with her right before prom, reducing Buffy to tears.

Meanwhile, Xander discovers that Cordelia is working in a clothing store before the excessive teasing can start a hell hound rushes in and starts attacking people in formal wear. This supernatural part of the episode's plot is secondary to the emotions running rampant. On the night of prom Buffy easily dispatches the hounds.

Instead the main focus is on growing up and unfortunately apart from people we care for while maturing. Since Cordelia's father has lost his job and she needs to work she doesn't have enough money to pay for her dress but on prom night she finds out Xander has graciously paid for the dress. However, Cordelia has to show up at the dance alone since Xander, who was desperate for a date, actually went with demon-turned-human Onya. Oz and Willow go together of course and Giles and Wesley are chaperoning. Wesley actually gets a dance with Cordelia which makes him very happy but he had to be snapped at by Giles to actually get his bottom in gear. Buffy also comes alone but tries not to let it bother her. In a surprising act of compassion Buffy is presented an award by her fellow classmates that names her the protector of the class of 1999 (the lowest mortality rate a class of Sunnydale has ever seen thanks to Buffy). The award is given to her by Jonathan, whom she talked out of suicide in "Earshot". This alone brightens Buffy's spirits but the icing on the cake is when Angel shows up for a dance.
