12. "Helpless"

In the opening scene we see the remanants of some food while Angel and Buffy beat each other. Buffy finally gets on top and pretends to stake Angel. They talk after their workout. Angel wants to know what Buffy is doing for her birthday. Buffy tells him her father is taking her to the ice show and how psyched she is!

Then, Buffy studies with Giles. For some reason being a Slayer requires you to know what different minerals are. After the lesson with Giles, Buffy goes patrolling. In the middle of a kill Buffy gets dizzy and the vampire almost stakes her with her own stake. Buffy manages to regain control of the situation but it spooks her.

Then, we see three British guys boarding up a house. The one in charge says something about preparing for the Slayer. A little while later Giles comes to talk to the one in charge. It appears Buffy is going to be tested. She will be locked in the boarded up room with a vampire which she has to kill. However, she will not have her powers.

Buffy's dad cancels on her, so now she is bummed. She goes to Angel's house. He gives her a book full of love poetry. Even though Buffy is becoming increasingly weak for a Slayer she opts to walk home by herself. She is attacked by the vampire that was supposed to be her test but he escaped. He killed one of the people watching him and made the other one a vampire. Anyway, since she is powerless she runs. Magically, Giles pulls up in his car to help her escape.

When they get back to the library Giles comes clean about the test. He also tells her how he's been drugging her while making her stare at a hypnotic crystal. Buffy feels hurt and betrayed. Cordelia gives her a ride home.

At home Buffy finds a message. The vampire has kidnapped her mother. Buffy goes to the house armed but weak. The old British guy tells Giles Buffy has started the test anyway, Giles runs to help her.

Buffy uses her brains to slip holy water into the cup the vampire drinks out of to take his pills. He explodes from the inside-out into dust, pretty cool! Giles slays the other guy who was just turned into a vampire. Joyce is ok.

The old British guy tells Buffy she has passed the test, but Giles has failed. Since Giles cares for Buffy, he is fired. Later, Willow has a hard time grasping the fact Giles is fired. While Xander feels the need to tease Buffy about having the strength of a regular girl. He ends up being laughed at when he can't open a jar of peanut butter any better than the weak Buffy can.
