3. "The Witch"

Buffy wants to get back into the spirit by being a cheerleader like she was in L.A. However, things take a turn for the worse when a girl spontaneouly bursts into flames at tryouts. Buffy, Willow, and Xander are determined to find out what caused it. Also, Willow introduces Buffy to an old jr. high friend of hers, Amy. Amy desperately wants to make the squad to please her mother because her mother was a star cheerleader. However, Amy goofs up during tryouts and both she and Buffy become alternates.

A girl's mouth disappears, she made the squad but can't be on it if she can't yell. Then, Cordelia, while out with the driver's ed teacher in the car, loses her sight and almost is hit by a truck. Cordelia made the squad and was especially nasty to Amy that plus Amy's coldness makes the gang think Amy is using witchcraft to get on the squad. They perform an experiment that lets them know Amy is the one casting the spells. However, they aren't sure how to confront her. Buffy can sympathized with Amy because her own mother is giving her a hard time.

We see Amy go home, there we see a different kind of picture than the one she painted to Buffy. Amy told Buffy she and her mom were like best friends that worked out together and had a great time. In reality, Amy's mom watches tv and eats all day and is terrified of her daughter. Amy orders her mother to do her homework while she goes upstairs to the attic. Amy is holding a bracelet we saw Xander give Buffy at the begining of the episode.

Since Cordelia can no longer perform her cheerleading duties, Buffy is rotated in. However, there is something wrong with Buffy she's too hyper almost like she is drunk or high on something. Willow and Xander get her out of practice after she uses her Slayer strength to throw a girl across the room. In her state of drunkiness Buffy starts rambling about Xander and how great he is. Xander eats this up until he realized Buffy just sees him as a girlfriend not as a potential boyfriend. Then, Buffy becomes very weak and tired.

Giles figures out that Amy cast a blood hardening spell on Buffy that ends in death. Buffy and Giles head over to Amy's house to find Amy's spellbook and reverse her spells before Buffy can die. At the house, Buffy realizes that Amy's scared mom isn't really Amy's mom, it is Amy herself. Amy tells them about how her mother switched bodies with her because her mother thought she was wasting her youth.

Buffy, Giles, and Amy in her mom's body go to the science lab at school to cast a reversal spell. A game that Amy's mom is cheering in is going on at the time. Amy's mom senses that someone is trying to reverse her spells so she runs to kill them. Willow and Xander try to stop her but she knocks them both unconcious.

Giles succeeds and all the spells are reversed. Buffy fights Amy's mom. Giles gets knocked unconcious. Amy's mom tries to cast a spell that will put Amy in a place where she'll never be able to disbehave, however Buffy uses a chalkboard to block the stream of power Amy's mom shoots out. The power bounces off the chalk board and hits Amy's mom. Amy's mom disappears and everything seems to be ok.

Cordelia ends up back on the squad. Amy gets to live with her father. We figure out that Amy's mom's spirit is trapped in her old cheerleading trophy in a display case in the main hall of the school.
