At Sunnydale High School, Principal Flutie starts out warm and friendly, but after reading her transcripts and finding out she burnt down her school's gym back in L.A. he's less than excited to have her. This puts a damper on Buffy's mood, but she must go on to classes. In one of her classes she meets Cordelia Chase. Cordelia adopts Buffy as her new best friend, Buffy likes having a friend but doesn't like Cordelia's attitude towards other people, like the class genius Willow.
We see Willow hanging out with two guys that are labeled dorks by the popular crowd. Their names are Xander and Jesse. Xander instantly develops a crush on Buffy, while Jesse has eyes for Cordelia. Cordelia is rude to Jesse which makes him feel worse, but Buffy tries to be nice to everyone.
Buffy goes to the library to get books. There she runs into the run librarian, Mr. Giles. He shows Buffy a book entitled, "Vampyr". This spooks Buffy and she runs out leaving behind a confused Mr. Giles. When Buffy hears about a dead kid founded stuffed in his locker, completely drained of blood she goes back to she Giles. He informs her he's her new Watcher and that Sunnydale is right on top of a hell mouth. Buffy says she doesn't want to be a Slayer anymore and bolts. We see Xander peak around a shelf of books looking puzzled by the conversation he just overheard.
That night Buffy dresses up to go to the town's only club, The Bronze. Buffy's mom is worried about Buffy falling in with the wrong kids but she lets her go. On the way to the Bronze Buffy is followed into a dark alley by a shadowy man. She has a scuffle with him, but he claims he isn't there to hurt her. He tells her he's there to help her kill all the vampires, and to help her stop the Harvest. Then he gives her a jewelry box with a cross in it and leaves.
At the Bronze Buffy has a talk with Willow about seizing the day. Then, she spots Giles and goes up to him to ask why he's hanging around at a teen club. He's there to help her hone in on the vampires. She brings up Mr. Mysterious Man in the alley but Giles doesn't know what she is talking about or what the 'Harvest' is. Then Buffy sees Willow flirting with a guy in dated clothing. The guy leads Willow out of the Bronze, Buffy follows but ends up accidentally cornering Cordelia. Cordelia vows to tell everyone in school Buffy is a freak. Buffy runs out of the Bronze and into Xander. He asks her what this whole Slayer thing is. She tells him that she has to find Willow or Willow will die.
Cut to Willow being lead through the cemetary by the guy. He gets her into an above ground tomb, this totally freaks her out, but he won't let her leave. His face goes all vampirey, Willow screams. Buffy shows up with Xander and so does Darla, another vampire, and Jesse. Buffy kills the guy vampire and starts to fight Darla. Willow, Xander and Jesse start running. A big, bad vampire named Luke comes and starts beating up Buffy pretty bad. Then, as he is about to get her "to be continued...." flashes across the screen.
