Background or Story:
Kurtis Bartholomew came to Haven after retiring from the Rockport guard. He spent many years fighting in his majesties service and had risen to the rank of Captain of the Guard. Known far and wide as incredibly tough, unyielding, and incorruptible, he had commanded the respect and loyalty of his men. During Bartholomew's command the guard reached a height of precision and ability that ensured against enemy advancement.
He elected retirement when he had the chance and took with him a sizable pension from the city. Moving to Haven was natural for him, since he had originated from the province. When he heard that the White Stag was up for sale he moved in and took the opportunity. Bartholomew resurrected the Inn from disrepair and through much effort turned it into the primary eating and lodging establishment in the region. Keeping friendly with the royal forces, it is understood throughout the command that any soldier passing through has a free room and meal at Bartholomew's establishment. His ale sales more than make up for his generosity, but that is the hidden shrewdness in being a businessman.
Kurtis's daughters, all three of them, missed the city at first, but grew up as fine women in the town of Haven and have moved on to marriage within the province, none venturing back to city life. He enjoys their visits on a regular basis and makes no secret of his priority regarding his children and grandchildren with the town-folk.
He is so well loved within the community that he could easily have a spot on the town council, and all the councilmen know that. He could probably win the mayorship as well, but he left the guard with no more political aspirations. He is content being an innkeeper and watching the petty dealings of the council and of the town. He actually enjoys it and knows that their actions aren't of much import, besides, the White Stag's tax contributions keep him and his establishment fairly safe from any attempts at pettiness from the town leadership.
Bartholomew knows many things and has experienced many more as a soldier and before that, an adventurer. He is able to see through other people's shields and motives. He does suspect Jur'is' true identity but knows that as an ally Jur'is would be unparalleled. He is naturally likable and isn't a gossiper, so he endears himself to others well. A natural leader.
