The Baby
By Sam Carter aka Vanessa Gray
The alert for off-world travel sounded. Since nobody was due back yetSG-1 went up to control room, where General Hammond was talking to the dialer man.
"What is it Sergeant?"
"General. Sir. It appears that the wormhole is being opened without the corresponding codes. Our sensors the cargo appears to be human, yet the mass and form seem to make it a child."
The General went quiet. A choice had to be made by him, he look at SG-1 for help. "Put guards on alert in the embarkment room. I'm going to allow the cargo to come here."
A few minutes later a big bundle of cloth fell on the top of the ramp low to the ground. SG-1 had in the mean time gone down. Captain Carter walk over to the bundle, which was now crying. She pulled away a few layers of cloths to see a cute face of a crying baby. There was a piece of paper with the word Dan-yer and hieroglyphics.
"I think that's for you Daniel," Sam passed the note to him, as she held the baby. "General you may want to call the medics."
Daniel saw the name and was visibly shaken. Daniel went up against the wall as Jack, Teal'C and Sam followed still holding the baby as she waited for Dr. Fraiser. Daniel read the letter out softly, as the rest of the team strained to hear the translation.
"Dear Dan-yer.
I must write this quickly. I recently learned that pain causes the Gou'ald to loose controls of the physical body for a while. It is during this time that I can do this act. Dan-yer the baby you have now is ours, my Gou'ald wanted to use our baby to blackmail you for information or worse, but I wouldn't allow our son to get hurt. So I did this no matter what the cost is to me. I want our son to be free and safe. I know one day you will find me and we can be a family. I love you look after him. I must finish if I am to complete this plan before either it awakens or Apothsis finds me. Love Sha'uri."
Daniel dropped the letter and ran out of the area. It was Jack who stoop down for the letter. It was at that moment that Dr. Fraiser came into the room.
Daniel's mind was racing. It was true that the baby looked like a month old and that it had been about eight months since Sha'uri had been taken. Could it be? Then again it could be a sick joke by Apothsis. The child could be his, or the baby could have a Gou'ald in him even though he was very young. The baby could be a trap. What if it wasn't? His mind closed that thought off.
Jack and Teal'c had searched the base and couldn't find Daniel. It was by accident that Jack spotted him. Daniel had chosen a spot between two concrete columns that if you weren't looking at that spot you could have missed him. Jack had seen him sitting there on a couple occasions when he had to think. Jack decided to let him stay there for the moment.
Sam and Dr. Fraiser were in the infirmary. Where they were checking the baby out.
"No signs of the heart bomb as Cassandra had. No Gou'ald lava to be found, according to the x-rays and other tests." Dr. Fraiser informed Sam, as she continued, "I suppose I have to do DNA test."
"How will you go about that?" Sam questioned.
"I'll use Daniel's blood and the baby's to look for genetic markers that are common in both. After, I determine the baby's blood type."
Sam waited patiently for the test. At least, the baby was in good health.
Jack and Teal'c just entered the infirmary.
"Do you know where Daniel is?" inquired Sam.
"Yea. He's thinking by the looks of it." Jack answered.
"Just what he needs after what happen to Skarra." Sam replied.
Teal'c looked at them. "We saw what happened to Skarra, when he was in pain. Is it not possible that the same could happen to Dr. Jackson's wife?"
Sam nodded.
A few hours later Dr. Fraiser walked back into the room. "I have the results. I think you better get Daniel and we'll talk about this in the conference room."
Sam volunteered to get Daniel, and got the directions from Jack, while the others went to the room. She found him staring at the wall. "Daniel. Dr. Fraiser finished her tests on the baby and wants you to hear the results."
Daniel look at her with the pain in his eyes. "What of he's mine, Sam?"
Sam didn't know what to say. "Let's fine out what the Doctor has to say."
Daniel got up and went with Sam to the conference room.
The general was talking to the Jack before they took their seats. Luckily, we allowed the cargo through, I don't think I could have lived with the knowledge we killed a baby."
"I feel the same way." Jack replied.
They were all taking their seats when Daniel came in with Sam. Daniel stood for a moment. Dr. Fraiser and Jack sat at one-side and Sam and Teal'c on the other. The general sat at the head of the table. Daniel felt like sitting at the other end of the table, but decided to sit away from the group in a seat on Sam's side.
"Daniel, the baby's fine. I've completed all the tests including DNA and the baby is your child. He's a little over a month."
Daniel got up and started pacing up and down. He stop to stare out the window at the Stargate with a look of disgust on his face. It was Jack, who finally spoke up, "Say something Daniel." Daniel sat down. "I wonder if my real parents are dead, or if I was just told that by my foster parents." Everyone at the table stared at him. Daniel laughed. "If they died, they had no actual choice, 'God' chose for them. But if they or she gave me up freely... Can I see him?" Dr. Fraiser went and called the infirmary, when she came back Daniel started again. "I don't think I should give him up." Sam had to stifle a shocked look. She couldn't believe he was considering it. "He's Sha'uri's and mine. If I do find her, how do I explain it to her, and if I don't find her at least I'll have part of her with me."
Everyone in the room was in shock, but Daniel was looking at the Stargate.
He had to consider the possibility even though his heart rebelled at the thought. "But if I keep him, who do I get to care for him while I'm on missions or working on base? I can't get a grandma or grandpa since they're dead, and I have no other relatives."
Dr. Fraiser was going to bite her tongue, but she couldn't do it. "If you want to keep him, I could help keep an eye on him in the infirmary, till he's old enough for the day care center. " She had loved looking after Cassandra. Daniel felt a little bit at easier after she made the offer. It was at that moment that the nurse/medical technician brought the baby into the room.
The baby was in a blue jump suit. Daniel wondered where they had gotten it. He went to the other end of the room away from the others. The baby had curly brown hair like Sha'uri's and his blue eyes. As Daniel rocked the baby, he started to smile. It was amazing that the baby had survived Stargate travel, much less be his. Daniel was fascinated by his little toes and fingers. As he went back to his seat. Daniel was smiling for the first time since he read the letter.
"Alexander Skarra Jackson."
"Pardon me?" The General questioned.
A smile registered on Sam and Dr. Fraiser faces.
"Alexander, the Macedonian Prince, who conquered many of the lands we believe that were controlled by Gou'alds. Skarra after his uncle who..."
Sam looked at the baby. "Hello Alex. Daniel we'll help you as much as we can."
Daniel had a smile on his face, "Alex."
The End
There is a squeal, coming.
