The Finest Science Fiction and Fantasy Books IMNSHO
These are not in any particular order, just a list you might want to peruse.
Tolkien's Lord_of_The_Rings Series
- The Classic that has been an inspiration for generations...
Lustenbader's The_Sunset_Warrior trilogy.
- Perhaps the finest Sword & Sorcery Trilogy ever written.
Herberts's Dune, the 1st Book
- A Science Fiction classic, this "Space Opera" is without peer
Donaldson's Lord_Foul's_Bane and all books related to that mythos
- Epic Fantasy, easily the equal of Tolkien's works...
Michael Moorcock: Elric_of_Melniborne, Dorian_Hawkmoon (The Runestaff) series,
and The_War_Hound_And_The_World's_Pain.
- Works somewhat akin to those of E.R. Burroughs, and R. Howard, these books demonstrate how the student has surpassed the Masters
Farmer's Dark_Is_The_Sun
- An excellent book, set against the backdrop of a dying Earth....and a band of motley refugees who seek escape from the End of All that was..
Friedman's Coldfire Trilogy, starting with Black_Sun_Rising
- A superior SciFi/Fantasy series, set on a alien world where one's wishes....and nightmares....can take physical form.
Burrough's John_Carter_of_Mars, all of them!
- A Classic series by the Author of Tarzan. Despite the dated material, it is a fast, enjoyable read.
Howard's Conan of Cimmeria all of them as well!
- Its Robert Howard. Its Conan. What more can be said?
Salvatore's The_Crystal_Shard, and his The Cleric Quintet series.
- Perhaps the only fantasy author that has really excelled writing novels in the AD&D genre....forget Dragonlance, spend your money more wisely, and buy these instead.
Foster's The Damned series, starting with A_Call_To_Arms.
- Alan Foster has been steadily cranking out provocative, spellbinding SciFi for many years....this series depicts Man at perhaps his happiest occupation...mercenary.
Watt-Evan's Lure_of_the_Basilisk, and related books.
- The trials and travails of a lone Overman and his Warbeast..serving the Priest of Death in his attempt for immortality.
Brunner's Shockwave_Rider, and the Eternity_War
- Science fiction as its finest. Without peer. 'Nuff said.
Niven's The_Long_Arm_Of_Gil_Hamilton and other Knownspace novels.
- Hard core SciFi, intermixed with glimpses of a not-so-impossible future...thought provoking, and frightening at times....but always entertaining.
Tanith Lee's Death's_Master
- Excellent fantasy....demonstrates the way a god of death *should* be played...
Lovecraft's The_Call_of_Cthulhu, The_Dunwich_Horror, and others in the Cthulhu Mythos
- Step over, Mr. Poe. Cthulhu is knocking on your door (it ate the raven...).
Rowley's The_War_For_Eternity,The_Black_Ship, and Starhammer.
- You may not have heard of the author....but these novels are excellent, excellent Science Fiction. Try The_War_For_Eternity, you wont be disappointed!
Cooper's The_Dark_Is_Rising series.
- A primer for excellent Fantasy, fans of the Arthurian mythos should read these.
Hogan's The_Genesis_Machine
Zelazny's The Amber Novels
Brin's The_Uplift_War
- I knew this novel was bound for a Hugo as soon as I read it...and then I read it again.
Wingrove's Chung Kuo series.
Feist's Riftwar series
