Some Poetry

Or Peekings into the Mind of a Tortured Soul

In this page, I am showing off my deep and emotional side a bit. Here are some poems of the love-type persuasion that have gotten rave reviews over the years and I think you'll like them too.

Here is a handy list of poems available on this page. Click on the name to jump to that poem.....

Untitled (5/27/94)

I always had trouble with unrequited love. Here I put my feelings into words:

Would you know the feelings of my heart?
Would you know that it's there?
Would you know my life is torn apart?
Would you even care?

I glance at you, and look for a few
Moments, but never too long do I stare.
I cannot bear it, and turn I do
From your blue eyes and long golden hair.

You break my heart, you torment my dreams
When I see you with that guy.
The jock's a clown, a moron it seems
He got you because he's not as shy.

What is there to love, this curse, this grace?
What would you do if you were in my place?

"One-Way Love" (5/30/94)

This is my first attempt at free verse. It's about having a crush on someone, despite the fact that that person hates you. This was very painful for me, so I wrote it into a poem.

As I lie here, I think of you in my arms,
I am holding you and loving you.
We look into each other's eyes,
We are much in love.
I mutter something in your ear, you nod in reply,
and then...
I am awoken from my reverie.
I am alone with reality.
I see you in my heart and in my mind.
However, it is a one-way mirror.
I see you at school, at work, at play.
If I lived a billion days,
I would never lose your image.
Your voice is the singing of angels.
Even the very mention of your name gives my heart a rush.
If I allowed myself to say it, I would
repeat it until my tongue fell off.
Your hair is solid sunshine, soft and pure,
Your eyes are seas of whire surrounding eyes of azure.
You move as if you were a dandelion seed flitting in the wind.
Stepping like a graceful dancer, a gliding dove,
But then...
I remember a different side.
I see a very ugly figure.
I see eyes of fire standing there,
With clenching teeth and disheveled hair.
I see that you would not have me.
I thought I had done nothing to offend.
But you, with your claws of red,
Ripped a gash into my tender soul.
All that I have seen before, all that I heard,
Was torn from me as you gave me that word.
You were not the rose I thought you was,
Just the thorny stem under that façade.
But the rose lives on with me,
And you are the angel of my dreams once again.
Even though it is as fake as it was for you,
It does me much more good, however.

Luvia (6/7/97)

This is in my opinion my best poem ever. I read this at a coffee-house event in my dorm last fall and I swear, everyone cried. I still meet people who remember this poem! There is, of course, a real Luvia, a woman who I still cherish deeply. But enough about me--just read the poem! :-)

So now it's time for us to part,
We must go our separate ways,
"Fate has done us wrong," I yell,
As by your side I wish to stay.

I look back and remember the day
When I was a stranger in your land,
You saw me in your anguish then
You took me by the hand.

I traveled then to heaven,
With an angel by my side,
I was so touched by your love that
I almost fell and cried.

Showering love like a gentle rain,
You revived my desert soul.
Healing the wounds of years of pain,
You took my heart and made it whole.

I knew I did not deserve you,
You were wonderful beyond compare,
But whenever I had need of you,
You always were right there.

You moved my life so powerfully,
By your warm embrace,
Your gentle smile and deep brown eyes
Removed the sadness from my face.

But now time flies and I wonder,
As I hold my tears at bay,
Why the perfect one in the world for me
I have to leave today.

Even though I must leave you now,
Don't fret, my eternal friend.
For as this love was meant to be,
Our paths will cross again.

On Winter (12/10/97)

Here, I just thought one day that I would write a poem on winter. So I did.

Long are gone the days of summer,
Here at last is winter's reign.
Cold winds blast across the meadow,
Frost forms on every windowpane.

Leaves fall off the trees at random,
Flying with each icy gust,
And soon the snow will come and join them,
Wafting through the air like dust.

Then falls the snow with wild abandon,
Covering the ground in a blanket of white.
The sun makes it shine with a heavenly glow,
The moon lights it up for the creatures of night.

Winter streams with light and color,
Far above the standard norm,
Although the beauties of winter are many,
They're best enjoyed SOMEPLACE WARM!

Erica (2/7/98)

Here's a redoing of a poem I wrote a long time ago for a girl named Erica.

Erica, sad, lonely girl
With so much love to give
You crave a man to take your hand
And let your love-light live.

Erica, sad, fearful girl
You've been hurt by men in past.
All of them were perverted jerks,
None with a love that lasts.

Erica, shy, cautious girl
You need no fear of me.
I'm not like all the other men,
I'm here to set you free.

Erica, dear, precious girl
Don't want your heart to break.
I love you more than anything,
I give love, not just take.

Erica, sweet, angel girl
No matter what you do
I make my vow that I'll not leave
I'll be right here for you.

Erica, great, darling girl
I take you by the hand
A world of love awaits us both
Inside the promised land.

Cyberlove (2/21/98)

Here's a poem to all you cyber lovers out there...

Peering out into cyberspace,
I, a lost soul, searching, yearning, looking
For refuge from a brutal world.
I find you in a crowded chat room,
Your name intrigues me. I say hello,
And from your first word I know
That you are a special woman.
We talk more, and I discover
That we are so much alike
Your life almost mirrors mine.
Our lives fit together like puzzle pieces.
You fill the holes in my life that
I never knew were there until now.
I never expected in all my life to find
Someone who understands me like you.
You give your love so freely to me,
The words on the screen touch my heart
Like I never thought anything could.
Although we are thousands of miles apart,
I swear I can feel your presence here.
I feel your true beauty embrace my soul,
And surround my heart with feelings of joy
That I didn’t know were humanly possible.
I love you more than anything,
Although I’ve never seen your face,
And don’t even know your real name.
I want to be near you so badly,
I want to love you like no one has ever done.
I don’t care what you look like,
For I have already seen your heart,
And that is the most beautiful thing in the world.
I want to hold you close to me for all time,
And lose myself in your love forever.
I give my heart to you now, with a pledge
That no matter what it takes
I will find you and take you as my own.
Until that day can happen,
I will wait with baited breath
And dream of you and your saving love
And know that I have truly found home.

Angel (4/7/98)

A tender poem for a beloved angel.

I never believed in angels,
Until I saw your face.
Your loving smile and deep blue eyes
Came from a different place.

I never knew that angels flew,
Until you took my hand.
When you held me, my heart took wings,
And floated off the land.

I never felt an angel's love,
Until you kissed me sweet.
You bathed me in the depths of bliss,
You made my heart complete.

I never trusted miracles,
Until you changed my life.
You turned my sadness into joy,
You turned away my strife.

I had never found a heaven,
Until you showed the way.
Your arms are home to paradise,
In you I'll always stay.
