Random Book Generator

This script will allow you to easily generate a random selection of books for use in a library or book shop. Some assembly may be required. Suggestions are always welcome (veleda@usa.net).

Book Length Cover Material

very short - 1-10 pages wood - includes covers made of thin boards of wood as well as books bound in box-like covers.

short - 10-25 pages leather - includes covers of standard leather such as from cows, sheep, goats, and alligator.

mid-sized - 25-75 pages cloth - includes various types of cloth covering stiff paper as covers.

long - 75-150 pages paper - includes scrolls, stacks of related but unbound papers, and handmade paper covers.

very long - 150-300 pages clay - includes thin sheets of baked clay as covers, as well as books in clay tablet form.

tome-sized - 300+ pages special - includes skins of dragons, golbins, and elves as well as covers of metal or other strange material.

Book Quality Content Quality

inferior - This book is old, torn, frayed, or partially missing. totally useless - This book is filled with grammatical errors, mistakes, or just plain lies. Study of this book worsens the PC's ability with any applicable proficiency by -2 or 15%. Fiction books are boring, badly written, or utterly vulgar.

poor - The pages of this book may be torn or old, some pages may be missing, may be difficult to read due to age. somewhat useful - This book contains little more than common knowledge, but may be useful for the extreme neophyte. Fiction books are dull, but readable.

fair - This is a standard book. useful - This book contains apprentice level information on the given subject. Fiction books are good, but lacking in style.

good - This book has been treated well, even delicate pages are easily read. very useful - Textbook quality, these books are useful in research. Fiction books are well written and entertaining.

excellent - This book is new or preserved by magical means as well as being constructed from the best materials available. master level - These books are sought after by scholars as well as tradesmen of the particular craft. PC may learn NWP from 20-WIS weeks of study and practice. Fiction books are extremely well written or are legendary tales.
