United States Senate Resolution No. 155

As of Friday, March 20th, 1998:

WHEREAS,

April 6th has a special significance for all Americans, and especially those Americans of Scottish descent, in that the Declaration of Arbroath --- the Scottish Declaration of Independence --- was signed on April 6th, 1320; and that the American Declaration of Independence was modeled in part on that inspirational document; and

WHEREAS THIS RESOLUTION

honors the major role that Scottish-Americans have played in the founding of this Nation, such as the fact that almost half of the signers of the aformentioned American Declaration of Independence were of Scottish descent; that the Governors of nine of the Original Thirteen States were of Scottish ancestry; and that Scottish-Americans have successfully helped to shape this country in its formative years, thus guiding this Nation through its most troubled times; and

WHEREAS THIS RESOLUTION

recognizes those monumental achievements and invaluable contributions made by Scottish-Americans which have resulted in America's preeminence in the fields of science, technology, medicine, government, politics, economics, architecture, literature, media, and the visual and performing arts; and

WHEREAS THIS RESOLUTION

commends the more than 200 organizations throughout the United States which have committed themselves to honoring the true heritage, traditions and culture of the Scottish people, representing the hundreds of thousands of Americans of Scottish descent, residing in every State, who have already made the April 6th observance of Tartan Day a success; and

WHEREAS

these numerous individuals, Clans, Societies, Clubs and fraternal organizations have further committed themselves to their constant determination that the great contributions of Scotland's people do not go unnoticed:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED,

that the United States Senate hereby designates the sixth day of April of each year as.......

"National Tartan Day"
