Mixed Assault Groups

The Mixed Assault Group was an idea I came up with while playing the Robotech RPG in high school. It is based on this line of thought: Most RDF/REF squads are based around a single mecha. Vermillion Squadron is based on Veritechs, Wolf and the ATAC squads are based on the VHTs, and the new Skull Squadron is based on Alphas. The only problem with this format is that most player groups have a wide variety of mecha. Depending on the era, this can be Valkyries, Destroids, Alphas, Betas, Vindicators, AJACs, VHTs, or Logans. In the REF era, it can be all of the above.

To solve the problem of having a player group being split into 2 or more squads (depending on mecha chosen), I just decided to make a completely different squadron designation: The Mixed Assault Group.

The Mixed Assault Group can consist of any number of Veritechs, Destroids, or VHTs. The 1st MAG, my original playing group, consisted of 2 Legios (2 Alphas and Betas), 2 VHTs, a M.A.C III, and an AJACs. By having such a variety of mecha, we were able to complete missions that a single mecha squad may not have.

As far as roleplaying a M.A.G. in the REF, consider the group to be superior pilots who have been specially trained in combined arms combat. A M.A.G. is usually assigned to Special Operations and other especially difficult mission types. If a lot of firepower is needed in a small group, then a M.A.G. is definately the unit to send to complete the job.
