Terrain and Climate: Temperatures range from -10 to 30 degrees Fahrenheit in the winter and 70 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer. While the surrounding area tends to be flat with low rolling hills, Baltimore City itself consists of hills; some low and short, some high and several miles in length.
Land Area: Baltimore: Baltimore City fills the entire area of land inside of the old I-695 Beltway, with the confined area originally part of Baltimore County given over almost completely to farmland.
Land Area: Commonwealth: The Commonwealth of Baltimore claims a direct sphere of influence that extends from the old Mason-Dixon line in the north, to the suburbs of old Washington, DC in the south. It is the only remaining original city in the state of Maryland. This is due almost completely to a risen sea level, which has left Annapolis completely underwater and the entire Eastern Shore a swampland. There are 3 major townships scattered to the west that were founded by the Commonwealth for the purpose of supplying additional materials to the city. Minetown, the western-most town was built on the ruins of Hagerstown. Detrickville was built on the ruins of Fort Detrick and Frederick. Westburg was founded on the ruins of Westminster. The only city not founded by Baltimore is the Columbia City-State, an allied, but independent city.
