Full of Grace

This song could represent Mulder in any one of his blue periods, such as in "Demons". His emotions pull him into a dark place from which he cannot escape. His resurfaced memories of Samantha, his sister, bring a surge of depression which even Scully can barely break through. On one hand, if only he could lift himself out of his dark memories and vanish his demons, he would be Scully's perfect lover. On the other hand, he and his partner have gone for so long without expressing their full emotions that to do so now would be too much of a risk.

The winter here's cold, and bitter
It's chilled us to the bone
We haven't seen the sun for weeks
Too long too far from home
I feel just like I'm sinking
and I claw for solid ground
I'm pulled down by the undertow
I never thought I could feel so low
oh darkness I feel like letting go

If all of the strength and all of the courage
come and lift me from this place
I know I could love you much better than this
full of grace
full of grace
my love

So it's better this way, I said
having seen this place before
where everything we said and did
hurts us all the more
Its just that we stayed, too long
in the same old sickly skin
I'm pulled down by the undertow
I never thought I could feel so low
oh darkness I feel like letting go

If all of the strength
and all of the courage
come and lift me from this place
I know I could love you much better than this
full of grace
full of grace
my love

Witness

A question rarely asked is, "What will happen in the end?". Will Mulder and Scully, indeed, find the Truth they have searched for together? If they do, will it be a grand revelation to banish all their misery, or will it merely cause more pain? After all their struggles, can Mulder and Scully ever be happy?

Make me a witness
take me out
out of darkness
out of doubt

I won't weigh you down
with good intention
Won't make fire out of clay
or other inventions

Will we burn in heaven
like we do down here
Will the change come
while we're waiting
Everyone is waiting

And when we're done soul searching
As we carried the weight
and died for the cause
Is misery made beautiful
right before our eyes
Will mercy be revealed
or blind us where we stand

Will we burn in heaven
like we do down here
Will the change come while we're waiting
everyone is waiting

Plenty

For the first time, Scully seemed to willingly betray Mulder in "Fight the Future". She tells him that she is leaving the FBI; in effect, leaving him. Abandoning Mulder, his quest, his passion, every part of their past, with such apparent fickleness is the worst blow that she could have delivered. Before Scully, Mulder had been emotionally empty; she filled the void. He assumed that Scully would always be there to support him. How could she leave him like that? The stunning pain of this question leaves Mulder nothing to lose, and he finally bares his soul.

I looked into your eyes
They told me plenty
I already knew
You never felt a thing
so soon forgotten all that you do
In more than words I tried to tell you
The more I tried I failed

I would not let myself believe
that you might stray
And I would stand by you
No matter what they'd say, I would have thought I'd be with you
until my dying day
until my dying day

I used to think my life
was often empty
a lonely space to fill
You hurt me more than
I ever would have imagined
You made my world stand still
and in that stillness
there was a freedom
I never felt before

I would not let myself believe
that you might stray
and I would stand by you
No matter what they'd say, I would have thought I'd be with you
until my dying day
until my dying day
