Above the world of Khomm, everything was quiet. The small, unimportant New Republic world had not seen change for the nine years since the Empire had attacked it. Little did it's cloned citizens know that a large Fleet of Imperial warships hung just outside the range of it's sensors. It knew even less about the fact that the New Republic had been unable to contact the small planet to warn them about the fact that Imperial spies and agents had infiltrated it's population and begun preparations for an occupation.
The Empire was beginning to make it's move.
In one of the numerous, identical cities, a small device that was unique on the cloned world stopped it's regular flashing. At that point, everyday life stopped it's regular cycle....
"Admiral, the first wave of incendary devices has detonated. All the planetary sensors have been rendered useless." Admiral Pellaeon waved the comm officer away with a flick of his hand.
"Good, continue with the operation." Pellaeon took a final glance at the Fleet of warships assembled around the giant hull of the Eclipse-class Super Star Destroyer 'Venom', before the starlines blurred and they jumped into hyperspace.
Less than two minutes later, the First Imperial Occupational Fleet emerged above Khomm. The tactical officer reeled off messages from various ships in the Fleet. "All ships accounted for, Admiral. Task Force Cauldron reports all ground forces away. As of yet there has been no resistanc-" The tactical officer caught his words as a flurry of new messages appeared on his screen.
"Admiral!" He screamed,"We have New Republic forces entering realspace in sector MX-4!! Initial scan reports Liberation Battle Group size!" Pellaeon hissed under his breath.
"They must have known we were coming." He said. He cleared his voice then ordered reluctantly, "Deploy all fighters, move us into attack positions - we must engage those forces if there is any chance of us being victorious here today."
Aboard the Flagship 'Defiance', Admiral Ackbar surveyed the situation that the Liberation Fleet Orion had just dropped into. Ahead of the Fleet lay an almighty Eclipse Super Star Destroyer and dozens of Imperial Star Destroyers. The Liberation Fleet had been designed to tackle occupational forces of nominal strength - never something this size. But they didn't have much choice now.
"Launch all fighters, move all capital ships into attacking posistions, drop the ground forces and see if we can get a signal from Khomm." Ackbar barked his orders across the bridge.
Glancing out his starboard viewport, he caught the waves of New Republic fighters speeding towards the enemy.
"Make sure the cruisers can cover the fighters - we don't want them taking heavy losses." But that was inevitable, in a battle like this....
General Wedge Antilles checked the read-outs in his familiar T-65 cockpit. He'd asked to lead Rogue Squadron in the liberation of Khomm and had supposed he would enjoy it - but looking at those odds it wasn't going to be fun.
"All wings report in," He looked around him at the assembled X-,A-,Y-,B-,T-,E- and K-Wings all speeding towards the Imperial ships, backed up by a squadron of captured Blastboats.
"Red Leader, standing by."
"Grey Leader, standing by."
"Green Leader, standing by."
"Blue Leader, standing by."
"Gold Leader, standing by."
"White Leader, standing by."
"Black Leader, standing by."
"Wraith Leader, standing by."
All 8 other fighter wings had reported in correctly, so Wedge proceeded. "Lock S-Foils in attack positions." All around him the X- and B-Wings complied. Looking at his targetting computer, he noticed that the first wave of TIE Fighters was nearly upon them.
"Hold tight, here they come..." A huge swarm of TIE's of various models shot by all around him, spitting turbolaser fire. Several New Republic fighters were caught by the first wave and exploded, but many more of the unshielded TIE's bought it.
After what seemed an age, Wedge emerged from the swarm intact, his targetting computer registering three kills from his random fire.
"Rogue Two, Rogue Three, stay with me. We've got to give the bombers a chance to get to those Star Destroyers." Choosing a flight of four K-Wings from Black Wing, Wedge, Tycho and Hobbie - Rogues 1,2 & 3 respectively- dove in from above and plastered the six pursuing TIE Interceptors with laser fire. The two interceptors that survived careened off in a crazed getaway, one of them falling foul to E-Wing White Six's lasers.
Checking the distance between them and the nearest Star Destroyer - ID'd as the 'Revenge' - Wedge threw his X-Wing into a steady dive after the last TIE. The Fighter banked wildly from side to side as it tried to evade Wedge, but two blast from his wing-tip lasers soon put that to an end.
"Tycho, Hobbie, those K's are nearly in range of the Star Destroyers guns - lets give'em something else to worry about."
"Copy, Rogue Leader." was the reluctant reply from Tycho.
"Hey, you ain't going soft on us now are you Tycho?" was the excited reply from Hobbie as the three X-Wings arrowed towards the 'Revenge'. As they neared the big ship, the E-Wing of Red Three and the A-Wings of Blue's Six and Seven joined on the wing. Wedge noticed that several of the Star Destroyers were beginning to re-orientate themselves towards the big incoming New Republic cruisers. Good, he thought, that gives them something else to worry about.
"Rogue Leader, this is Black Leader - we are in range and starting the attack run."
"Copy, Black Leader - I'll try and draw their fire." Flicking the nose of the X-Wing into a shallow dive, Wedge and his five wingmen dove towards the narrow edge of the STar Destroyer.
"Rogue Two, Rogue Three, concentrate on those forward batteries."
"Copy, Rogue Leader - I'm on it."
"This is Red Three, i'm making a run on the warhead launchers - cover me Blue Five."
"I'm right with you Red Three." The three pairs of ships dove in at targets along the nose of the 'Revenge', Wedge - along with Blue Six - was attacking the forward sensor array.
"Blue Six, watch the fire coming from those starboard batteries."
"Affirmative, Rogue Leader." Wedge watched his targetter go green, then uleashed a hail of red laser fire onto the sensors, which was quickly joined by Blue Six's contribution. As they pulled out of the dive, Wedge noticed large pieces of the array missing.
"Good shooting, Blue Six." The pair pulled up and away from the white hull of the 'Revenge', narrowly avoiding the anti-ship laserfire. Hobbie, Tycho, Red Three and Blue Five quickly caught up with Wedge.
"Rogue Leader, this is Black Leader - thanks for the cover, eggs are away." Wedge glanced below him to see the four K's drop their payload then kick in the third engine to get them the hell out of their.
"All ships, dump all power into your foward shields, fighters, get away from that Eclipse Star Destroyer, its preparing to fire it's superlaser," shouted Admiral Ackbar. Wedge watched the green lance of light stab at the MC 80b Calamari Cruiser, the Honor. It stood no chance, that blast could destroy whole planets, the Honor's shields absorbed part of the blast, but the shields could not hold. It erupted into a huge ball of light, heat, metal, and flesh.
"Admiral Ackbar, someones gota take out that Elipse Star Destroyer, or at least it's superlaser, and I'm the man for the job." said Blue two.
"What do you mean," asked the Admiral?
"Have the fleet weaken his forward particle shields so I can get in 'em."
"Then what?"
"Don't worry about it, just do it!" replied Blue
two. Wedge watched hundreds of missles fly out the New Republic
Fleet, crashing against the Eclipse Star Destroyer's
particle shields. After about ten minutes of constant pounding he
saw the shield shimmer and die. Blue two flew right at the ship.
"What was he up to?" thought Wedge. Blue two went IN
the barrel of the superlaser. "What could he do in there, if
he droped his bombs he'd never get out in time," but Wedge
realized it was a suicide mission. Blue two armed all the
warheads on his fighter, and set his reactor to overload. He
watched the count down clock go, five, four, three, two, one,
zero! His ship, and all his warheads exploded into a large cloud
of flame and heat. The superlaser's barrel was small enough to
compress the explosion further, sending it down the power relays,
amplifiers, converters, and generators, reaking havoc all the
way, seccessfully disabling the superlaser. Watching the red flames and black smoke spew out of
the front of the Eclipse Ackbar new what had happened.
Whoops and cheers sounded in his ears from the bridge crew.
Then the ESD fired all its turbolaser cannons at the fleet, while the rest if the ISDs advanced on the New Republic fleet to finish it off.
