The X-Men  lay to rest Illyana Rasputin, a mutant who is Colossus's sister.  She died from a strange virus called the Legacy Virus that only affects mutants.  Magneto takes this oppurtunity to "visit."  He claims this is the fate of all mutants who follow Prof. X's peaceful ways.

Magneto offers all the X-Men haven in Avalon.  None of the X-Men are interested, save one:  Colossus.  After losing his sister and suffer an injury preventing him from changing back to his human form, Colossus is having difficulty beliving in Xavier's Dream and wishes to find a new way to help out mutants.  He chooses to join Magneto and leaves the X-Men, forever.  (I know he came back, but ey, Colossus is part of the X-Men mythos.)
