On the northwest corner of Front Street and Short Street in downtown Columbus there is a little pocket park which is surrounded by a vacant lot. Just the park seems out of place in such a desolate, out-of-the way part of town, but the statue inside is even weirder.
The Park
There's a statue which dominates the little park, of a fat guy in a robe with a crown on his head, holding up a glass of something. His right foot is on a barrel, and he looks happy.
Who is the guy? Is he a king? A mythological figure? Or is he the Ghost of Christmas Past? I've never been able to figure it out. Does he have something to do with the Brewery District, since he's holding a goblet of wine? He is right next to this part of town. If you know, please tell me.
I think it's interesting that people drive past this park and statue every day and never notice it. I was eighteen before I noticed it, and I know I've been by it before. There's a little park there with trees and bushes and a couple of benches, but who goes there to sit? I've never seen anyone. I just hope they don't demolish the park, with its obscure statue; it's a fascinating place to see.
