Is the Dreamcast Dreamcrap??

The first Editorial of the new Millenium!

In the early 1990's, SEGA brought everyone their 16-bit revolutionary console we know as the Genesis...fairly popular.

In the early-mid 1990's, SEGA had the decency to bring out SEGA CD...failure.

In contention with Sony's, then, newly released system, the PlayStation, SEGA fought vigorously not to be overshadowed by this new mysterious contender. Thus the birth of the SEGA Saturn...talk about blow-off.

And as we step into this, the third millenium, SEGA's last desperate attempt at delivering a decent, lasting console, is in the form of the acclaimed Dreamcast...ok, if in desperate need of crappy gaming.

Now, I wouldn't be writing this article if I hadn't played the Dreamcast yet, believe me, I have. I recently read an article over at IGN64 and the subject matter was about how revolutionary Nintendo games were. Take the very first Mario game on the NES. It changed the whole video gaming world. It set the standard for all 2-D side scrolling games to come. And now take Super Mario 64, N64's launch game. It totally bedazzled me the first time I picked up the controller. Every game that gets released on any Nintendo game console is a revolutionary game in my eyes. Revolutionary in the fact that it starts a whole new trend of gaming. When I first picked up the heavy, bulky, Dreamcast controller, I expected revolutionary gaming...afterall, it is in fact a new system, and I'm guessing the people at SEGA are tryin' their hardest to make it a new experience. When I played Sonic Adventure, poof! All my questions were answered. No, it wasn't a revolutionary gaming experience. As I was playing, I saw nothing new, no breakthrough in gaming. I could've sworn I had played this game before, it just has better graphics. Simply put, the game was like every other run-of-the-mill platform game.

It stinks, because developers these days are focusing way too much on graphics. I must admit, Dreamcast does have better graphics than on any other console. Obviously! If it was release AFTER PlayStation, and AFTER the N64, wouldn't you expect that they'd make the Dreamcast's graphic better? Common sense, people! Take NFL2K for instance. Sure they try and go for realism, like snow accumulation, visible breath in the cold, etc., but look at how the players move. That is not realistic. The players run/walk/tackle/throw as is if they didn't have any joints, like robots. That certainly is not realism. What's with that? If this is supposedly a new, next generation console, wouldn't you think they could do better? Rather pathetic if you ask me.

Also, what's with all those "Soul" games? You've got Soul Fighter, Soul Calibur, Soul this, Soul that...in my opinion, Dreamcast needs soul because it doesn't have a life at all.

Please, take my advice, just wait for the new Dolphin or PSX2 system to come out. DOn't waste your time with the Dreamcast. For those who already have one in possesion, I feel very sorry for you. Till next time...
