Touring Joe on the Top of Vermont
This page, and those to follow, document the adventure of Touring Joe as
he visited Vermont as part of his extended
'99 Summer Tour.
Accompanying Joe are Babs Dahl, recently of the Pink Aisle,
and Sgt Bytit, complete with his Sunny Smile.
Joe's host in Vermont was ScottE,
HoloSuite@yahoo.com.
Our Touring Joe has a special weekend assignment.
He needs to ascend to the highest point in Vermont to service
the triangulation beacon installed there. The peak, Mount Mansfield,
is 4,393 feet above sea level, with a rise of approximately 3500 feet
from base camp.
The cover story for his mission is that of co-leading a group of
Boy Scouts on a weekend campout.
The plaid lad requisitions a field uniform, backback, and field glasses
for this leg of his journey. Babs and Bytit stay behind for further briefing
on the remainder of the mission.
As the troop ascends, they pass into the Arctic-Alpine Zone.
Vegetation is reduced to the simplest of mosses and lichens
due to the climatic conditions. Joe is admonished to keep his
feet on the trail to avoid disturbing the local flora.
This fits in well with the new Scouting emphasis on No Trace Camping.
Having succesfully serviced the survey beacon on the peak,
Joe returns to camp to assist in preparing a hot meal for the troops.
