***************************************************************************** Star Fleet Marine Unit Organization Star Fleet's Marine Units are comprised of, in order from largest to smallest, the following: Divisions Regiments Battalions Companies Platoons/Batteries Squads/Gun Crews Outlined below are the recommended minimum staffing levels, command level, and basic mission each of the units. Division Comprised of a minimum of three regiments, with 5 regiments being the recommended number, commanded by a Lt. Gen. or a Maj.Gen. The Division is a totally, self-contained unit, answerable only to Star Fleet Command, that includes logistic, supply and command support for itself and subordinate units. The overall mission of a division can be diverse, and often is fragmented out to various specialized units within the division. Unit designation: x Division or xDIV (where x equals a number.) Regiment Is the largest of the specialized units, comprised of a minimum of two battalions, with 3-5 battalions being the recommended number, commanded by a Brig.Gen. or Colonel. Regiments usually will have a specialized mission, i.e., Ground Combat, Artillery, Air Assault, etc. Although the overall mission is specialized, it is not unusual to see a mix of units in one regiment, i.e., an artillery battalion or company in a ground combat regiment. Unit Designation: xDIV, yARTY or xDIV, yREG or x Division, y Artillery Regiment. (Where y equals a named number of the regiment, i.e., first, second, etc.) Each unit will be named in the order that they were created, of that type, or to replace a vacant unit in the superior organization. Example: A new ground combat regiment is formed in a division with three such units. Therefore, the new unit is the Fourth Regiment. Also, a new artillery regiment that is formed in a division that has an artillery regiment and multiple ground combat units, would be the Second Artillery Regiment. (Note: Unless specified by a specialty designator, a regiment, battalion, or company is ground combat forces.) Battalion Is the largest unit assigned to Starships, comprised of a minimum of three companies, one of which may be a slightly smaller company serving as a Headquarters Company, with the recommended number being 4-6 companies, commanded by a Major or Lt. Colonel. Battalions are usually more homogeneous in relation to their mission, although it is not unknown for ground combat units to be assigned to artillery units for support. Unit Designation: xDIV, yREG, yBN or x Division, y Regiment, y Battalion. Naming conventions for battalions are the same as for regiments. Company The smallest unit capable of independent action, comprised of a minimum of 2 platoons, with the recommended number being 3-4 platoons, commanded by a 1st Lieutenant or Liutenant Major. Companies are usually made up of specialized platoons and squads. Unit Designation: x DIV, yREG, yBN, CO z or x Division, y Regiment, w Company. Where z equals a letter in the Roman Alphabet and w equals a letter in the Phonetic Alphabet, i.e., Able, Baker, etc. Exception: Companies serving as Battalion HQ Companies are designated as follows: xDIV, yREG, yBN, HQ CO. or xDivision, yRegiment, yBattalion, Headquarters Company. Platoon/Battery Smallest field command, comprised of a minimum of 4 six man squads, commanded by a 2nd or 1st Lieutenant, assisted by a Platoon Leader (Gunnery Sgt.). Three of the squads will be "Rifleman" squads with the fourth being a Heavy/Special Weapons squad. The Heavy/Special Weapons Squads also encompass demolition. A battery is the artillery version of the platoon made up of a minimum of 4 six man gun crews, commanded by a 2nd or 1st Lieutenant, assisted by a Chief Gunner. There is no equivalent to the Heavy/Special Weapons squad in the battery. Squad/Gun Crew Made up of a minimum of six men. The squad is lead by a Sgt. or Corporal as a Squad Leader and a Corporal or senior PFC as Asst. Squad Leader. The remainder of the squad is made up of Pvt.'s and PFC's serving as "Riflemen". The Gun Crew is the Artillery version of the Squad, comprising the same numbers and lead by a Sgt. or Corp. as Gun Captain and a Corp or PFC as a Gunner's Mate. The rest of the Gun Crew is comprised of Pvt's and PFC's who serve as Gunner/Loader's. Ranking system as practiced in SF: Commissioned Officers Grade Naval Rank Marine Rank O-1 Ensign (Esn./Ens.) Second Lieutenant (2LT) O-2 Lieutenant, junior grade (Lt(jg).) First Lieutenant (1LT) O-3 Lieutenant (Lt.) Lieutenant-Major (L-Maj) O-4 Lieutenant Commander (LCdr./LtCmdr.) Major (Maj) O-5 Commander (Cdr./Cmdr.) Lieutenant Colonel (LCol) O-6 Captain (Capt.) Colonel (Col) Both the naval and marine ranks follow the U.S. navy with one noted exception. The marine rank of O-3 is 'Lieutenant-Major' rather the USMC rank of 'Captain.' (Cpt.) Basically, this is to get around the 'honorary' rank of 'Major' to said marines while on naval vessels, which is done to avoid confusion with the naval Captain of the ship. In other words, we are skirting the problem altogether with the 'L-Maj' rank. Enlisted Crewmen Grade Naval Rank Marine Rank E-1 Crewman Recruit Private E-2 Crewman (Yeoman) Private First Class E-3 Crewman First Class Lance Corporal E-4 Specialist Corporal E-5 Petty Officer Sergeant E-6 Chief Petty Officer Gunnery Sergeant E-7 Master Chief Petty Officer Master Sergeant E-8 Sr. Chief Petty Officer Sergeant-Major It does not mirror the USN or USMC exactly and it completely ingores the system of 'rates.' *****************************************************************************
