He had a wife and a son that died. This explains him living in a big house and in an 8th season episode, he says that he lost somebody and there is a picture of a kid in his wallet.

In Salvage he said he was in "the war." I'm assuming he ment the Gulf War because a man in this episode supposidly had Gulf War Syndrom.
