I am calm now only because I jumped around for a bit. I am not usually this calm right after viewint the words "To be continued..."
Now. Well then. That was............. I am not sure if I really like the premise. Almost any episode that contains the words "space-time continuom" strikes me wrong. I've read too much third grade sci-fi where third graders try to use the "space-time continuom" as a premise without knowing ANYTHING about it. But, according to friend Adam, everything that happened in that episode is scientifically theoretically possible. And I guess that's what the X-Files is about- making serious everything that before then, many would have discounted as silly. (Little green men...)
But this episode was GREAT! The suspense was intense, from the very moment that Mulder had the weird body-switching thingy. I hope we find out in the next episode why he views himself as... well... himself. It was a good move drama-wise, however. Mulder can act as if he is pretending to be Mulder MUCH better if he is the actor who usually plays Mulder. Wow, getting repetitive, sorry. And it also made for some pretty spiffy scenes and shots- the Mulder-in-the-mirror scene! If you watched, at times the "reflection" was just a tad off... :~)
*NOTE- at this point, I get involved in an hour long discussion with Adam over space-time and dimensions. Then I realize how late this is, save my draft, and go to finish homework and then to bed. THEN I wake up, o to school, thoroughly confuse everyone by talking about the fourth and fifth dimensions and quantum physics, and all the other weird things that Adam put into my head. Then almost a week passes... and, exactly a week later, I am going to finish this letter. New letter starting... right... NOW!* WAHOOOOOOO! Yeah! That was GOOD! I LIKED the end! Crazy and stupid, but somewhat good! *calm down... ok, we can begin rational discussion now...* First, I'll get my complaints out. It didn't FEEL right. Something about it was just WAAAAY too contrived feeling... It's theoretically possible and all, but... it doesn't have that real feeling anymore. Thye X-Files used to have me completely (well, almost) convinced that whatever was happening to Mulder and Scully was completely possible. But this season, compounded with the move into the murkier waters of the mythology with the movie, the paranormal phenomenon behind the episode no longer feel convincing. We used to deal with some silly stuff, like glow-in-the-dark fluid-sucking bugs, and weird things with red eyes running around the woods, but it didn't feel as silly. Mulder convinced us tha the aliens were real, that the lake monsters just might be there, that cockroaches might be alien vehicles. This season has been no less real than the last five, but why... argh... why does it FEEL SO CONTRIVED????? Why? Why do I believe the aliens and not these scientifically accurate things? (half of this last paragraph has been taken directly from a chat with friend Adam as I write this...) Do any of you have this same feeling as well??? Episode 1, they don't get the X-Files back, but go deal with the alien anyway. A lot like the previous season's fare.
Episode #2- Drive! GREAT episode! Pretty realistic. More or less scientifically backed up. Heads exploding a little weird, but I can stretch my mind that far.
Episode #3- WHAT?????? Space-time warp? Huh? Scully's there? Cool episode, but, my, what WAS that?
Episode #4- Space-time continuum? Um... help? Eee?
Here, instead of explaining I'll just give you a segment of chat that I keep copying and pasting from anyway.
Adam: see...i felt like the aliens were too contrived, too forced. except for any black oil alien episodes, i thought the alien episodes were way too....way too much playing on a popular image that the target audience will buy in to. these episodes appeal to no one except the lover of the paranormal.
Aniad: I think that the difference is in our background knowledge, then. See, I never grew up with the standard alien fare. (Hey, I thought that fantasy and sci-fi were stupid kiddie genres until sixth grade. Shows how much I thought I knew.) Aliens were never real OR fake for me, until The X-Files, which made them so real and possible.
Adam: however, alien episodes before..um..like the third season, they were cool. silicon based life forms, and the like...they were all neat ideas.
Aniad: Yeah, maybe those turned me on and sortof melded into the popular form, making it more believable.
Now, the things that my friends were writing in third grade, which seemed silly, are slapping me back in the face as real phenomenon. And I'm not ready for it.
Or maybe I can't deal with an ending that resolves everything.
No, the words "space-time continuom" have scared me ever since I saw "Fearful Symetry", which I thought was bad.
Adam: ha! sci-fi is like...anti-kiddie. ;)
Background? Is that the explanation for the way we view what The X-Files gives us? How about you all out there in E-mail land?
Now, the HAPPY part of what I have to say!!
COOOOOOL! I LIKED that! I actually HATED the part where the wife found Mulder in the car with Scully- I just felt sorry for her. And it was so... I HATE it when the plot does that! Hate it and can barely stand it but love the way it is all resolved and then wonder, WOW, The X-files RESOLVED something??? That's pretty cool!
Hehehehehe! Mulder has a BEDROOM!!!!! YEAH! Ha!
He has a BED! And a NICE one!
The scene where we saw the reflection, Mulder in Mulder's voice joking with Scully on the water bed, it had so much emotion. For a brief instant, I understood how all the shippers feel.
"I'd kiss you if you weren't so *bleep* ugly!"
Hehehe!
Not that I'm about to convert from my confused non-shipperness. I'll have to go back to the new OEM home and start confusing everyone with my explanation of exactly where I stand on the shipper scale again.
And we revisit the Little A'Lee'Inn or whatever that place was! It's been over a hundred episodes since we last visited Area 51!
The scene in the bathroom was just precious!
And the boss doesn't know anything! When WILL Mulder find ANYONE who knows ANYTHING?
Spender did something GOOD! GO!
I love those happy UFO-watchers!
"WHOA! Black mailbox!"
"But it's white."
"They were messed up!"
"I believe you."
And so on, and so forth, with the fun and happy quotes I am probably not getting right.
And I REALLY MUST go, and finish an essay. Please reply!
