THE
PEACEMAKER STARRING GEORGE CLOONEY AND NICOLE KIDMAN,
Let me
start off with an overview of the plot and then i'll
get into the
review.
Renegade Serbs steal ten nuclear warheads from the
Russians,
setting one of them off near the beginning of the
movie to
coverup the theft. Enter Lt. Col. Clooney and Nuke
Terrorist
expert Kidman. They soon figure out that the other
nine stolen
warheads are on their way to IRAN. Upon informing the
president
of the situation, he promptly puts Kidman in charge
of tracking
them down. Kidmans 'in charge' status, however, is
soon
overshadowed by Clooney's mere presence and acting
ability. He
dominates for the rest of the film and Kidman
willingly seems to
step aside.
At times The Peacemaker seemed very BOND~esque, like
the scene
with the Apache chopper getting shot down at the
russian border
and the car with the bulletproof glass saving Clooney
and Kidman
from becoming nine millimeter soup.
Being the first major release from Steven Spielbergs
DREAMWORKS
SKG, I feel they could have done a lot better. There
were a
couple of very intense sequences and overall the
special effects
were very good but that's not enough to make this a
really good
movie. I will say that the nuclear detonation scene
was
outstanding but that was the only outstanding thing
about THE
PEACEMAKER.
As I was walking out of the theater after the film, I
was
thinking to myself, "I'm glad I didn't pay to see
this". I was
also analyzing why that's how I felt.
Was it a poorly written plot?? (it was so-so) Were
the special
effects lame?? (absolutely not/they were excellent)
What about
the actors? (they did not seem to support each other
very well at
all,
remember how well Clooney and Tarantino complimented
each other
in DUSK TIL DAWN). Maybe a little love action would
have helped,
who knows? The thing is, it all just didn't come
together as a
great movie. It was just O.K. and that's all. If any
of you
reading this review has read Tom Clancy's 'THE SUM OF
ALL FEARS'
and seen THE PEACEMAKER already, I think you'll agree
that
DREAMWORKS SKG should have just bought the rights to
that book
and used Clooney as the Arab terrorist and Kidman as
his bitch
and kept Harrison Ford as Jack Ryan, the hero. Then,
maybe I'd be
writing a positive review about an excellent movie
instead of
telling you that Clooney's acting and the special
effects are the
only things that made this movie watchable. On a
scale of 1-10, I
give THE PEACEMAKER a 5. If you haven't seen it yet,
I suggest
you wait for the video or don't bother....
