Well here's another piece where i was frustrated at men. Anyway I normally pass up these Scully leaves stories, but I heard a song on the radio(L.A. Song by Beth Hart) and I'm in the mood so......
Skinner's office
8:00 A.M. Monday
J. Edgar Hoover building
Mulder bursts in Skinner's office searching with his eyes. The secretary looks up from her typing. Agent Mulder, let me guess you need to see Skinner "right away." Mulder nods. "Of course you do." Her tone was sarcastic and she got up from her desk walking towards Skinner's door. She knocked and opened it slightly. "Sir.." With that one word Mulder pushed past her "Agent Mulder here to see you." She walked away.
"Uh huh so Mr. Mulder what can I do for you." Mulder looks hurried. "Sir I'm worried Scully might have been taken again. She hasn't called me since the thanksgiving holiday, and I went by her house and clothes are missing." Skinner puts a hand up to hush Mulder. "Scully opted for a special assignment I had for a couple of months. She said she felt the change would be cathartic for her. I was sure she would have informed you."
Mulder looked truly stunned. For all his years of seeing the unexplainable, this news was what seemed absolutely unfathomable to him. "No sir she didn't inform me." He said quietly. "Where is she?" Skinner looked up from his resumed paperwork. "I'm sorry agent Mulder but I'm afraid that would jeopardize security." Mulder looked as if ready to argue. "Agent Mulder everyone needs some time away, and heaven knows you've ditched her enough times. Give her the same luxury."
Scully pushed to 80. The highway felt wonderful. Flight felt wonderful. With each passing mile she felt like she was being lifted. These past few months of feeling dead emotionally were being drained with the nighttime flying past. She needed to be free of all the pain and frustration in Washington D.C.
For all she loved Mulder the games they had played for 7 long years made her tired. In the past month she had come to the realization that he would never want a relationship with her for whatever reason.
It was a crushing blow to end a dream that had sustained her. She had always told herself she could wait forever just so long as it did happen. His kiss at the dawn of the millennium opened her eyes to what her heart would not see. This was a man comfortable right where they were.
But the question then was she? Had that been her only reason for staying so long. She had to leave was all she had known. This had seemed the perfect opportunity. Live with a man pretending to be lovers for a month to infiltrate a crime ring. Hardly any risk with new faces and a new life.
She had fallen immediately for her new partner. Scully like most truly sensitive people don't fall often but when they do they fall hard. He was a fairly good looking person, not great, but had some nice traits. It was his humor that threw her over the edge, and his sensitivity.
He seemed empathetic to her thoughts. He listened when she lamented over Mulder. He seemed interested in all of her life, and soon they were spending more and more time together. Her month was up. Mulder's calls were sporadic, and his visits even less. Scully broached the subject with caution to her new found friend. Where should they take this? All her mistakes of missed opportunities with Mulder she was bound not to make.
Her mind still tended to reel when she thinks about how fast his answer came. He was only looking for something "casual." His eyes flashed like a deer caught in the hunter's sight. "You're a wonderful woman, I still want to date..." For the most part he turned tail and fled.
For the next two weeks it was hard for him to get away from the bureau. He finally admitted his job and climbing the FBI hierarchy was his main priority right now. Oh it hurt a little, but Scully was used to that. Not like she hadn't been hearing that one for years. Same story different chapter. "I need the truth Scully." Yeah sure ya do Mulder like you need another hole in your head. I could arrange that.
Scully packed her little suitcase once again. It would be nice to get out of this town. If this kept up, Scully mused, her faith in the entire male of the species would be lost. Last night in this god forsaken town.
Just then a knock startled her ripped existence. She looked out to see Mulder. Yeah okay she thought. She opened the door. "Mulder please come in" He looked bewildered. "Why did you leave, and more importantly why didn't you come back on time?" "Come to finally check up on me. Must've been hard getting away." she deadpanned. He looked at her. "It was." She laughed. "But you've managed fine without me." She said while packing some of her last items.
"Scully what are you doing here? What's the real reason? It's me I know you. You don't do this" She stared at the audacity of the man in front of her. "You know me? You don't know me. You know the person you want to. Maybe I do this! Maybe I did before I met you! Did you ever care to ask?"
Mulder looked at her "You know how I feel about you Scully." She looked at him. "Mulder I never know what you're feeling, nor do your actions help to tell me anything. We know nothing about each other." There was venom in her voice. "Maybe I don't know because you never shared." he countered. "Did you ever ask? Everything was on a need to know basis." Mulder looked helpless. "I thought of our relationship as more than a friendship....love." Scully looked bewildered this time
"Mulder people in love aren't content with what we have, people in love can't sit across the room without wanting to be next to each other.....and I can't live like that anymore. I can't be ignored for the rest of my life. I don't want to have to compete for your attention. And I shouldn't have to. I've got to go." "Where are you going now?" Mulder pleaded. "I don't know Mulder, away. I ran away from a man that told me lies and now I'm running again from the same lies. You can't have it both ways Mulder. You can't have the feelings of a relationship and all the pretty ideas without the relationship. You can't have someone to share your life without responsibilities to that person, and you can't have a bond with a person without a tether. I need not to have to worry right now was all you ever said when asked about your ideas on girlfriends, well now you don't." Mulder looked shocked. "When will you be back." She smiled "I wish I could say. I've waited seven long years for you to be ready for a relationship it's your turn to wait now."
