"It's all right," he said in a resigned tone. "You don't need to explain anymore. It'll only hurt more."
She sighed and rolled back over to face awy from him. "I only wanted to be loved by you." he thought he heard her whisper.
The next morning, Kevin was up before the sun rose. Just about the time he was finished making breakfast, Morgan walked into the kitchen, dressed in one of his t-shirts and slippers.
She stretched and yawned, asking as she did, "What are you doing up so early?"
"Making breakfast," he answered looking up from the omlete he had created. "Have a seat. It's almost ready."
"I usually don't see you till ten on Saturdays," she remarked as she sat down, pouring herself a cup of coffee.
"Yeah...well...you know. The ocean, salt air..just can't keep me down." he answered, shrugging. He avoided looking at her. He was afraid that he would suddenly loose his anger again, and even though he was mad at her, he still loved her and didn't want to cause her pain.
After breakfast, they sat outside on the patio. Kevni had seated himself on one of the deck chairs and burried his nose in a book, deciding that escaping the situation might be better than having to deal with it.
Morgan stood by the railing, leaning on the edge as she stared down at the waves crashing on the rocks below. She seemed to be mesmerized by it's rythmn and drumming as they hit the rocks.
"And the waves, burst into the shore, with mighty explosions, as the clouds greyed the sky.
"The sea wind blew strongly, coming with the waves, bringing with it, the soft songs of sirens.
"My eyes and mind wandered, stretching 'cross the sea, bringing back sweet memories, of long ago..." she sang softly.
Kevin was instantly drawn from his reading. He stared at her in amazement, having never heard her sing before. The melodic sound of her voice seemed to blend with the wind and the beating of the waves in such a haunting melody, he wasn't even sure he had heard it.
Her song had changed her, as well. Her eyes seemed to overflow with saddness as she, again, looked longingly down at the water. She seemed to look at it as if it were a home for her. In that moment of song, she had never seen her more beautiful.
"That was so lovely," he said, finally able to find his own voice.
She quickly turned to face him, now looking ashamed and embarrassed. "Thank you," she replied softly. She hesitated a moment, then said, "It's an old song. My mother used to sing it to me when I was little. She said that it had come from the sailors." she turned back to the ocean, offering no more information than that.
It had been the only part of her past that she had told him. As he tried to remember the words, they floated away from him, like seafoam on the waves.
A few minutes later, Morgan turned back to Kevin and asked, "Would you get me a glass of iced-tea?"
Kevin put his book down and got up. "Sure. I was just thinking of getting one myself."
He walked inside, closing the glass door behind him. He went into the kitchen and poured the tea into two glasses, still trying to remember the song that she had sung. No matter how hard he tried, it seemed to bury itself farther into the out of reach places of his mind.
As he walked out of the kitchen, he saw Morgan standing up on the railing, balancing precariously between the patio and the sky, with the water and the rocks waiting far down below.
He dropped the glass, too scared to hear it shatter on the floor. He ran to the door. She turned and faced him as he started to open the door, then jumped.
Kevin watched her disappear from view, unable to move. He felt as thought it had happened hours ago, moving slower than time could have possiblly allowed. Her figure slowly fell from his sight, her hair flying wildly behind her, almost like wings. He still stood there, even after he couldn't see her. Thoughts rushed into his head and back out again at a furious pace. 'She's gonna die,' he thought calmly, then the world and time seemed to snap back into place. |
