Myths about Self Injury


Myth: Self harm is a sign of madness

People who self harm are not mad, they are people who suffer a great deal of stress and unhappiness

Myth: Someone who self harms is a danger to others

Someone who self harms is unlikely to harm anyone else. The focus is themselves. It is a terrible myth as it is very wrong to state something like that.

Myth: Self harm is attention seeking

Self harm is not attention seeking. It is the persons way of dealing with difficult emotion, it may seem to the like the only way they can survive

Myth: People who self harm do not feel the pain

Pain may not be felt at the very moment of the injury, but usually afterwards the pain is quite obvious to them. People may not enjoy the pain, but it can feel like such a relief it may appear like they do.

Myth: Self harm is a suicide attempt gone wrong

Self harm is a way of surviving, keeping alive, and managing to function from day to day. Some may attempt/commit suicide but that is a separate issue
