My Problems with faith
Skeptic
People always ask, "What is it that makes you not want to believe in god and jesus?" Well I must first
remind them that I think on a diferent level than the majority of the population. I am naturally a skeptic, so
no matter how wonderful it would be for me to be able to believe in a personal creator that loves and
watches over me, it is physically impossible for me! I must have some sort of reasoning to believe in an idea,
not just someone's word!
Personal experience
For example, I always am told, "I have had a persoanl expierience with my god and that's how I know it's
true." Well, there are two major flaws with an argument like this one; first I am not you, so I am not seeing
what you see, feeling what you feel, & I have never had your personal life experiences. So it is completely
worthelsss to me for you to tell me about your life as proof of god! Second, even if god actually talked to
you or altered the course of history & time in your favor, it still means nothing to me. It has no hard
evidence for it, it's like telling people that you saw a UFO ans almost was captured. Don't you assume that
anyone you tell this to will be skeptical? I mean they didn't see it, you have no real evidence in this
statement, & they don't even know if a UFO exists at all! They will most likely ask if you have any proof.
Maybe an artifact stolen off the ship, other people who witnessed you near abduction, an alien still lurking in
the bushes, etc.. etc..., it really doesn't matter how much evidence, but do you have any? In the case you
say "NO," then they have no obligation to take your word for it, it is second hand knowlege as soon as the
event occures and you tell someone.
Faith
People always tell me I must have faith in god / jesus to know it's true. Well excuse me, but if I'm going to
dedicate my life to worshiping a supernatural being, I at least want to know if he's really out there or if I'll
just be waisting my time! Faith means believing in something without any proof and that which is believed
can not be tested for accuracy of truth. You must assume that what a person tells you is true (see above for
that problem) & that the belief does exist. This is a lot of assuming and not much thought. I cannot force
myself to first believe in something before knowing it's there!
Another argument about faith is, "we all have faith in something, so you must be religioys somehow, so how
is that any different from believing in my god?" Well here is a very common mistake in the religious
philosophies. They think that I must have faith in what I believe, but they couldn't be further from the truth! I
have no faith, except in the fundamentals, since you must first assume that the laws of physics are true and
that this is reality and not a person's dream or some other crazy bullshit, I guess I could have faith in such
things. I do not assume more than is necesary though, if an event can be explained without using the
supernatural then i will go with that one, the more complicated an idea becomes the less likely it is to be
right. Back to the faith in fundamental ideas. People like to say that, I have faith in such things as evolution,
science, money, family, friends, etc..; now if you think about that, that isn't faith, all those things can be
shown and proven to be real aspects of our world and my life. If you consider money the enjoyment of
worldly items to be a religion then the term religion and faith have no meaning since theists "believe and
worship" the same things as Atheists. The only thing that is different is that Atheists do not assume a god is
their, while theists do!
