As Kenshi laid dormant in his room, Leslie had just woken up in hers. She slowly stood up and walked to her door. She twisted the knob and pulled, allowing her to pass through to the living room. There she stood for a moment, staring at the door to Kenshi's room. She smiled a little and started walking to it. She slowly opened his door, trying to avoid making any noise. She succeeded in not awakening him and crept towards his bed. He laid there peacefully with a blanket over his body. She ran her fingertips across the side of his face. He stirred a little but did not awaken. She softly called out his name. He slowly opened his eyes partially and turned his head to look at her. When he saw her, he smiled pleasantly. She spoke softly, "Good morning Kenshi dear. Did you sleep well?"
Kenshi replied with a sleepy voice, "Well... I was until you woke me up."
Leslie responded with regret, "I'm sorry. I won't disturb you again."
He clarified his feeling, "No no. Stay with me. You're the best thing I've woke up to in years."
She smiled at him. "Do you really mean that?"
He smirked back. "Would I lie to you?"
She continued to smile and rubbed her fingertips across his cheek again. "You look so cute laying there. I'll go find something to fix us to eat."
Kenshi laughed at her. "I hope you like Fruit Loops."
"Surely you have some eggs or something."
"Perhaps, I can nuke those suckers in the microwave. Do eggs spoil after a long time?"
She looked at him and blinked. "I think it's time you went grocery shopping."
He sat up and showed a little more energy in his voice. "Are you kidding? I went shopping just a week or two ago. All I need are my Fruit Loops and plenty of milk and I'm set."
She shook her head at him. "I don't know how you've survived this long."
He retorted, "I'll have you know that this is the life and I wouldn't have it any other way."
"Well are you going to make me move out?"
He looked confused. "Of course not."
"Then I'm going to have to show you how normal people live." With that, she turned and walked out of his room. She walked toward the kitchen while Kenshi sat at the head of his bed. He grabbed his remote and turned on the stereo. He leaned back against the wall, listening more to Leslie search through the kitchen than to the radio.
After a few minutes, she entered the room again. "I have never seen a kitchen with so little food as yours."
Kenshi looked back at her smiling. "Why do you think I always took you out to eat rather than here?"
"We have to go grocery shopping today. I'll help you get some real food."
"Did you say... grocery shopping?" Kenshi gripped his chest pretending to have a heart attack.
"That's right Kenshi dear. Now get dressed and let's go." Leslie turned and walked out of his room.
They both got dressed and prepared to leave. Kenshi wore more casual clothing while Leslie looked more dressed up. They both left the house and entered Kenshi's car, with him in the driver's seat.
"You know, someday you're going to have to let me drive."
Kenshi smirked a little. "I'll think about it."
She narrowed her eyes at him. Then her face became more serious. "Well... I'm not serious though. You let me live with you which is more than you should have done. I'll repay you however I can."
Kenshi put his hand over hers. "Don't worry, just waking up to your face makes me happier than ever and that's payment enough."
Leslie blushed and looked away from him with embarrassment.
After a short drive, they found themselves in the parking lot of the supermarket. Both exited the car and started walking toward the building. But before they took more than a few steps, they heard a squealing sound followed by a crashing sound. Both turned around to see the obvious, two cars crushed into each other. They both stared for a second at the scene. Then Kenshi started flying towards the cars a few feet above the ground. Leslie's eyes widened even more because she just now learned that he could fly. After the initial shock, she followed him although she had no chance of keeping up with his speed.
He soon reached the cars and looked inside one of them. It had two occupants, both in the front. The passenger was conscious; Kenshi ripped off the door to let her out. He had to help her out of the car. The driver, however, showed no signs of consciousness. Kenshi reached over and felt no signs of life from her. He was saddened but knew that he needed to check on the other car. He jumped back out of the vehicle and ran to the other. It was a much larger vehicle and had suffered less damage. The sole person in the car was unconscious and had his head against the steering wheel. Kenshi opened the door and pushed the guy's head back. Kenshi did sense life in this man who had blood running from his forehead. He put his hand on the man's forehead and started healing him. There were a few spectators by this time, including Leslie and the woman he helped from the other car. After a few seconds, the man opened his eyes. Kenshi removed his hand and stepped back. The man was dazed for a moment, but finally he unbuckled his seat belt and climbed out of the car. The woman looked at Kenshi and asked why he hadn't done anything to her friend.
Kenshi regretfully answered, "I'm sorry but there's nothing I can do about your friend."
A man from the crowd walked to the car and climbed in checking on the woman inside. He climbed back out and spoke the words that Kenshi already knew. "She's dead." The other woman started crying and Kenshi looked at her sadly. The man continued speaking, "This centra just let her die."
Kenshi looked at the man confused. "What?! That's a crazy thing to think."
Another man in the crowd spoke. "He probably killed her."
Kenshi looked at him as he started getting angry.
Leslie spoke in his defense. "That's not true. Kenshi wouldn't kill anyone that he didn't have to."
The man spoke back. "All centra are evil. You're only with him because you're scared of him."
Kenshi felt more anger as he clenched both of his fists.
Leslie continued, "That's not true at all. I'm with him because he's a much greater man than people like you."
Kenshi's hands loosen slightly at her remark.
The man insulted Leslie, "You slut."
Kenshi let out a yell of rage as he held his hands in front of his chest. Between them a ball of white energy about half the size of a basketball formed. He threw the ball towards the surprised victim who had argued with Leslie. The ball made contact with the man's body and exploded. The people who were only a few steps away were knocked over by the explosion. Several people were covered with blood. There was nothing left of the man except a few bone fragments and pieces of clothing scattered in the vicinity and the splattered blood.
Kenshi and Leslie stared at the scene while everyone else ran off in fear. Leslie turned her head to look at Kenshi with tears in her eyes. He was still staring where the man had been with his arms stretched out as if frozen there. Leslie ran off crying after the other people. Kenshi came out of his trance and noticed her running away. He yelled out her name but it didn't stop her. She ran through the parking lot full of cars. He started running after her. She finally stopped and curled up in front of a car on the row nearest the building. Kenshi stopped beside her and kneeled down to her.
While crying, she said to him, "Leave me alone."
His face grew very solemn as people watched from inside the store. "Leslie, please listen to me. I didn't mean to do that back there. It was completely out of anger. I didn't even know I could do that."
She buried her head in her arms and knees. "That doesn't matter. As mean as he was, he didn't deserve to die."
Kenshi spoke back sadly, "I know. If I could take it back, I would. I didn't even realize what I was doing." She continued to cry. "Please don't hate me. You're one of the few things I have left in this world and probably the only thing that has kept me stable. I can't lose you. I love you." With that, he slowly and gently placed his fingers on her shoulder.
She happened to see a tear hit the ground below where he was kneeling. She slowly looked up and saw another one stream down his face. She stared into his eyes for a second and realized she couldn't be without him. She leaned over to him and wrapped her arms around him. He wrapped his around her the same.
