TRAVERSE CITY -- Each day, the Red Wings feel more fortunate to have selected defenseman Jiri Fischer.

Fischer, the Wings' first-round pick this year, has impressed coaches with his talent and willingness to learn and work.

"Jiri Fischer has played very well," associate coach Dave Lewis said. "He works each drill at game speed. Sometimes you have to remind young players of that. His eyes are wide open and he wants to learn everything he can."

Fischer, an 18-year-old native of the Czech Republic, was projected by the Wings to be a top-10 pick in June's draft. But he somehow slid to the Wings' 25th slot in the first round.

"Our scouts couldn't believe he was available," General Manager Ken Holland said. "He has a good feel for the game."

Fischer, who played last year for Hull of the Quebec Major Junior League, will be returned to Hull for further seasoning. But he said his first exposure to a professional camp has been enlightening.

He has been struck by the way the veterans go about their work, and the speed and physical nature of the pro game.

"The veterans know how to play the game so well, all you need to do is stand and position yourself," Fischer said. "It's been a little easier than I thought."

Being from the Czech Republic, Fischer idolized players such as Dominik Hasek and Jaromir Jagr while growing up. To reach the NHL, Fischer said it was important for him to come to North America and get accustomed to the style of play.

"The game is much different here," he said. "I'm happy I made the decision to leave home. It was hard, but I got used to it. I had to learn the language."

Fischer has become fluent in English, and his game has progressed. Along with being mobile and a good passer, he isn't afraid to be physical, as demonstrated by his 112 penalty minutes in 70 games at Hull last year.

"Everybody likes to hit," Fischer said. 1
