As Voyager is cruising though a system, they are suddenly attacked by a ship that has been hiding in the magnetic pole of one of the planets. And, to their surprise, the ship turns out to be a Maquis ship! They contact the ship, but it continues the attack until Chakotay talks to them. The Maquis captain is an aquiantence of Chakotay's and is very surprised to see him on a Federation vessel. The captain tells Chakotay that his ship was also brought into the Delta Quadrant by the Caretaker in the array, and over 2/3 of them didn't survive. The Maquis reluctantly agree to talk with Chakotay and Janeway, still unsure whether or not Voyager was sent after them and Chakotay is a traitor, much like Chakotay felt about Paris at first. In their talks, they seem agreeable, though with reservations, to work together to get home, though they refuse to come over to Voyager and insist on staying on thier own ship. On the side, however, the captain tries his best to convince Chakotay to "come back" to the Maquis and convince the others to join him and break away from Voyager. Other Voyager Maquis members hear of this and seem inclined to want to join the Maquis captain. Now, the crew seems to be splitting apart again - old mistrust comes back to the surface. Chakotay tries his best to keep it in check, but things rapidly get worse. Some of the others try to talk Chakotay into joining the other ship, and Torres is curious as to what he will do. Chakotay sees the destructive potential of the situation, and finally tells the Maquis captain that he or the others can't join him, though some of the others may defect. The Maquis captain, now sure that Chakotay is working for the Federation as a traitor, tries to sabatoge Voyager, but fails. Then, seeing how the Maquis captain never intended to cooperate with them, Janeway must order her crew to abandon the Maquis ship to go its own way. This is the final straw in the captain's eyes, and he once again attacks Voyager. Janeway defends Voyager, but the Maquis ship simply will not stop their attack. Voyager disables the Maquis ship, then the sensors detect a warp core breach in progress. Janeway orders the Maquis crew beamed off the ship, but the shields are raised. They don't respond to Voyager's hails. Chakotay realizes the Maquis have created the breach themselves! Voyager's crew watches in horror as the Maquis ship explodes...
