Play It Again Kim

Voyager finds a derelict ship, which Neelix recognizes. After an initial survey, Janeway puts Neelix and Kim in charge of surveying the ship. They bring some objects back to Voyager's cargo bay to study. They find an unusual device - a pyramid of some kind with lots of odd controls on it. At Kim's objection, Neelix presses one of the buttons and there is a flash of light, but nothing happens. Then, Paris enters the cargo bay and asks them where the hell they've been - they've been looking for them all day. Kim and Neelix check the clock and it is 2200 hours - they think it is only 1000! They suddenly realize they have some kind of temporal decive in their hands. They realize they must go back right away, but not knowing exaclty how it works, they end up a year or so in the past - perhaps seeing Chakotay in sickbay as in "Cathexis" or being back on the Sikarians planet from "Prime Factors." This is even more dangerous, they realize, and try to figure out how the device works. They end up three hours before discovering the derelict ship, then two weeks in the past, then, trying an altogether different control, end up on a very used and ragged looking version of Voyager. There are shocked when a 100 year old Kim walks around the corner and spots them. He says a very cryptic "Oh you're here. I wasn't sure of the exact date." Young Kim and Neelix are very shocked - it seems they are about 70 years into the future! And Kim is not his friendly, low-key self. Age and bitterness have changed him. Voyager is still far from home, and the thought of never seeing home again has made old Kim very angry. He is angry at Janeway for stopping too many times on the way. He did not want to die in the Delta Quadrant. So, he tricks young Kim and Neelix into giving him the temporal device and locks them in the brig. There are perhaps only one or two of the original crew still alive, and old Kim manages to avoid any quesitons about his doings. Young Kim and Neelix discuss the ramifications of what old Kim might do, when Neelix just disintegrates (so does old Janeway and old Tuvok in other parts of the ship). Old Kim returns - changed. He has gone back in the past, killed Janeway, Chakotay, Tuvok and Neelix, and in this timeline, is in command of the ship. He checks some readings, and finds that they are almost home. Our young Kim cannot believe that he would do something like that, but old Kim says the ravages of age change a person. Young Kim cannot live with what his older self has done and vows to do something about it. He manages to get out of the brig somehow, and gets a phaser. Old Kim is not worried - his younger self will finally see home. Kim then does the only thing he can - sets the phaser to kill and turns it on himself - threatening to kill his younger self, which will also wipe out the older Kim and all the bad he's done. Old Kim sees the determination on his younger self's face, and reluctantly gives the temporal device back to young Kim. Young Kim sets the dials and disappears from the future. Back on Voyager, he realizes he must destroy all trace of the device. But how? There is only one way, he grimly realizes. He is several hours before the discovery of the derelict ship again, so he builds a self-destruct device on the device, waits until Voyager discovers the ship, beams himself to the derelict ship, sets the self destruct, and it detonates, destroying the device and killing this version of Kim. On Voyager, our "real" Kim announces that the ship mysteriously self-destructed, not ever knowing what he did in the alternate timeline.....

Michael's comments: Michael didn't particularly like the old Kim character. He's also hard to sell on time travel stories. This one just didn't work for him.
