"Communiqué" Pitched to Michael Taylor April 1998 Copyright © 1998 Ethan H. Calk One by one, things start going wrong with several of Voyager's systems, and B'Elanna can't figure out what's causing the problem. First, the warp engines start going out of alignment, and she can't seem to keep them functioning properly. Then, the ship's computer systems are affected. There seems to be no cause for these problems. After thorough checking, B'Elanna detects the presence of some tachyon particles in the warp core, and some in the neural gel network. She has no idea where they're coming from, and can't seem to shield the systems from them. If the tachyon interference continues, the two systems may be damaged permanently. Upon further study, she thinks she sees a pattern in the interference - a regular frequency in the subspace layers. They try to match the pattern with all known natural phenomenon, but come up with nothing. What about a man-made pattern? they wonder. Again they try to match it to all known linguistic patterns, but nothing. Seven, however, eventually recognizes it - it is a code used by Species 523, which the Borg assimilated 72 years ago. Could there be some of these people left, and are these people trying to communicate with Voyager? As the systems continue to deteriorate, Seven sets out to decipher the code. They modify the sensors, and manage to get a rough fix on the source of the signal. Since the warp and neural systems are near total failure, they must stop the signal at any cost. So, Janeway orders them to head toward the source. As they approach, Seven finally deciphers the message - it turns out the signal is from Voyager itself - and it was sent from fifteen hours in the future! It seems they encountered a hostile race who wanted to capture Voyager and steal their technology. They engaged Voyager in battle, and Voyager was all but destroyed. At the last minute, Seven sent the tachyon signal and aimed it at the exact place where Voyager was exactly fifteen hours earlier. And, since tachyons travel faster than the speed of light, she essentially sent the message 15 hours into the past, warning Voyager away from the alien sector… Michael's comments: He felt this was a diluted version of another story I pitched earlier at this session (see below). He said he was also using an unknown phenomenon which was affecting Voyager in a script he was currently working on. He also thought it reminiscent of TNG's "Cause and Effect." |
