Braga Talks Voyager Hints of what lies ahead

The April 2000 issue of the official Star Trek Magazine contains a six-page interview with Brannon Braga, Voyager's Executive Producer. In the interview, Braga starts by commenting on how very pleased they are with the current season, despite "a couple [of episodes they] weren't thrilled with." After that, Braga reveals a bit of what's in store for us in the remaining part of the season: "There are a couple of surprises that I don't want to give away, but you may be seeing another Borg epic -- a Borg two-hour movie, or possibly a Borg cliffhanger, that we're thinking of as the third part of our Borg trilogy: 'Scorpion,' 'Dark Frontier,' and now a story in which there is a massive resistance movement within the Borg that could unravel them once and for all, that Seven gets involved with. It may also include, finally, a true romance for Seven of Nine against the backdrop of the resistance.
It may possibly see the return of a new Borg Queen. It's very conceptual at this point, but it's safe to say that there's one more Borg epic to come. And we've got another time travel episode coming up which I mentioned [with Tuvok]; we will possibly have more of Earth." [...] The future looks exciting, but when Brannon talked to us it was not yet confirmed whether there would be another season. "I don't really know, but I can only guess that there's a very, very good chance that there will be a seventh season. I can't imagine there won't be." And what about Voyager's eventual homecoming? "Don't know. It could happen this year, it could happen next year, it may not happen until the end of next year. I wish I could say!"
Just to prevent any wild rumors from spreading, Voyager's seventh season really is 99,9% certain. The official announcement is usually just made later on in the season, but there's fairly little reason to think the show won't be renewed. The interview also includes a few comments by Braga about his writing staff: "The writing staff has never been stronger. I'm very proud of everybody. Ken Biller returned and has been an invaluable presence here; he's really helped solidify this team and keep things organized. And Joe Menosky has always been my right-hand man. I just couldn't do the show without him." "Bryan Fuller has really shown this year -- he's doing great work -- and Mike Taylor always does great work. Rob Doherty is coming into his own, and we have two new writers, Raf Green and Robin Bernheim, who's a woman, finally. They're also doing well. We've never had a bigger staff, and they've never worked better, so my life has been far less stressful this year, I'm happy to say. Last year it was seven days a week, 14 hours a day; this year I have actually been able to take some time off!"
Lastly, in the interview Braga also talks about still being completely committed to the new series, and that even if he helps create a new series he's determined to stay on Voyager until the end, saying that "it's doubtful whether I would be running things day to day if there's a new show. But I want to see 'VOYAGER' through. I've been here since day one, and I'm very emotionally attached and passionate about it. I will always be involved." |
