History: As the first born in an academic family, Mike was pushed by his parents into the academic world. At the age of nine, he was already fluent in ancient Greek and Latin. However, he started rebelling and acting out in school. His parents, not knowing what else to do, sent him to spend his summer break with his Uncle Michael Smith, a Captain in Starfleet.
Mike fell in love with space and spent the summer bothering Uncle Mike and any other crewmember who would put up with him. He learned much about starship operations and would spend hours sitting on the bridge gazing at the view screen. A Lt. George Harmon took a special interest in Mike and introduced him to his second love: speed. Once when the ship was orbiting a planet, Michael broke into a shuttle and took off for a joyride. He disengaged the safety system and managed to burn out the engines. The ship fell into the planet's gravity well and crashed into the surface. Quickly, a medical team was dispatched and they managed to beam up the young pilot. His heart was badly damaged in the crash, and had to be replaced.
Michael was restricted from the bridge and shuttle bays and was escorted everywhere by a responsible adult. All of this didn't dampen Mike's enthusiasm and he spent the rest of the summer pestering crewmembers. When he got home, he dedicated himself to school work so that he would be able to enter Starfleet Academy. His parents were pleased at this change and persuaded him to focus more on academic pursuits. This lead to tension in the family.
The summer before he entered the Academy, his uncle died on an away team mission. Mike was shocked but decided to dedicate himself even more. At the Academy he was sometimes called "the red-blooded Vulcan" because he spent little time in social settings. As a result, he had few friends. The end result of all of his dedication was graduating fifth in his class and being posted to the USS Excalibur.
Having successfully completed his initial tour with the Excalibur, Mike has been moved from the Helm Officer position to the Chief Operations Officer.
