Chaos Magic has no definate structure. You can use any materials you want that you feel are symbolic to the cause. Like say a protection spell. Sure, you can burn candles and incense surrounding a beautiful metal sheild and sword, but you could also cast it by the light of a flashlight on an alter of nothing more than a plastic toy sword and sheild, saying whatever words you feel envoking. This is Chaos we're talking about. As far as components of a spell are concerned this would work. Noone is going to be insulted. This is acceptable. It's symbolic, good enough! However, even the use of the aids of items in a spell is of course left to the practitioner. The key things you want to remember are focus and concentration. Focus and concentration are very important. You are trying to manipulate the forces of Chaos. Also remember, this is Chaos. A simple thought rolls the dice of fate. Perhaps just once, but sometimes once is all you need.
All things flow from Chaos. All things flow to Chaos. The main purpose of this alter is to connect yourself Chaos. Anywhere you want it is fine, however, I personally would feel a place you would not be disturbed is preferable. (But hey, if you think on a catwalk above a freeway at 3am on a Monday would give you enough time to cast the spell before the cops or some homicidal maniac like myself comes along....) The Chaos alter is probly the only orderly thing in Chaos Magic. It is not neccessary to have a Chaos alter. Everything in Chaos Magic is left to the whim of the practitioner. As said, the purpose is to connect you (or better connect you) with Chaos. Thus enabling you to be connected to the many streams of Chaos. Anyways, a good way to know how to lay things out is to think of two squares overlaying making an eight-pointed star. Across from each "point" is it's partner. Modern is across from Evolve. Life is across from Emotion. Math is across from Science. Industry is across from Technology. In the center is Chaos. At each point put something you feel is representative for that point. You will no doubt find that many things may be representative for more than one corner, just simply put it at the one you think it best fits. Like I had a piece of broken tinted glass, which could also represent Industry or Technology, but I put it at the corner for Modern. Finding everything is sort of like a scavenger hunt. As for the center, Chaos. Take a piece of wire and coil it or any type of a coil pointing upwards. Think of it as an antenna recieving the signals of Chaos. Once you have the materials prepare your mind for your first Chaos spell. (It was my first Chaos spell anyways.) Find your place for your alter (No, it does not have to remain there for a long time or permantantly, just as long as you desire. I hope by now you realize Chaos Magic is very free flowing.) It only needs to be there for the duration of the spell (When you think the spell is complete.) Now get all your alter components out. They will be laid as you say this chant. Remember, the partners are across from each other. It doesn't matter what is next to what, just that the partners are across from each other. Here is the chant and when you say the ignite line, don't ignite anything, you are using your mind. Think of of the electrical energy that flows thru your body and brain and imagine igniting the alter with your own power:
"By the power of Life and the power of Emotion
By the power of Modern and the power of Evolve
By the power of Math and the power of Science
By the power of Industry and the power of Technology
Which emerge from a center of Chaos
I ignite thee with electricity
Which man has harnessed from the storm
From this new kind of power
A new kind of Magic is formed
~
I connect myself to this Power
So mote it be, it is done."
Thus you should find yourself connected to Chaos to some degree and ready to perform Chaos Magic.
You may have noticed it reads "new kind of power". This is symbolic. It refers to how old kinds of energy can always be replaced or recharged with new energy. So yeah, think of yourself as a battery for magical energy.
