Sarah Michelle Gellar plays the stake-wielding superhero in this spirited series, based on the 1992 big-screen comedy. In the opener, Buffy gets the news that her new home town of Sunnydale, Cal., sits above the mouth of hell and is about to be invaded by a brood of bloodsuckers. Buffy, aided by her friends Xander, Willow and Giles (The Watcher) tries to fight off the harvest and try to live a normal life.
"Buffy, The Vampire Slayer" was first a movie released in 1992. It starred Luke Perry and was generally panned by critics and made little money. The movie's writer Joss Whedon later went on to write the scripts for "Speed" "Alien 4" and "Toy Story". In the television series he returns and captures the spirit that was lacking from the movie. "For Each Generation...there is only one slayer". The "slayer" is played by Sarah Michelle Gellar who mixes humor with action She is aided by her two friends Xander Harris and Willow. During the first episode Buffy is befriended by Cordelia Chase but soon they become rivals. The Watcher--Buffy's mentor--is played by Anthony Steward Head.
Xander Harris is a gangly teen played by Nicholas Brendon who has a crush on Buffy. When Buffy gets a spell put on her by an evil witch she confesses to Xander that she loves him because "he's like one of the girls".
Willow is a "wallflower-computer whiz" played by Alyson Hannigan. Willow helps Buffy by breaking into the school computer system once in a while to retrieve info for Buffy.
