Redcap Character Concept: the Human Monster Hunter

by AJSolis@aol.com

Everybody has a childhood, even redcaps. And children can have friends or loved ones, even a redcap. Her name was Rebecca, and she never looked down on your antics. Then one day your world was shattered, and her life changed. You didn’t notice at first, but she became shy and withdrawn with bruises and cuts. Then one day while visiting her house at night your saw what was going on (as if you care about curfews!) with your own eyes. Your Chrystalis was finally finished at that moment in one shocked moment. They'll never discover his body, nor will he ever hurt her again.

A motley discovered discovered you shortly thereafter and taught you the ways of the kithain, but it didn’t matter. Rebecca is in counseling, and at least not in the hands of the dauntain (at the moment). Sometimes, when the rage becomes unbearable, you find others like him, human predators, rapists and molestors and child abusers. If seelie, harmful pranks and mind tricks are worked until the human monster cracks. Suicide or the insane asylum, it is all the same to you. Unseelie have more direct and lethal means of exorcising their personal demons.

Your legacy might be violence incarnate, but you will never stoop to their level.

Age options:

For a childling, this character will be like something out of a demented Disney movie. Violent and ill tempered, you work your magic on adults to destroy them.

For a wilder, the trauma and rage are somewhat cooled by time, but not by much. The relationship with rebecca will be an important issue. Has Rebecca healed enough to have a healthy relationship with you? Have you removed yourself from her life to protect her from your violent ways? What if she falls into the hands of a Dauntain, who slowly warps her from being the person you lovingly remember? And heaven help us all if she spurns you.

For a grump, the above questions must still be considered, as well as some new ones. If somehow still with her, are you married? Or do you obsessively stalk her, to protect her from any and all harm? Children? Kithain or kinain? have you admited your nature to her, or have you sheltered her from the truth? Is the hunt something you still feel passionate about, or just a duty born out of love of her?

For PC interaction, there are several ways to introduce such a character. They might be the oathcircle that finds him. Will they support his rather unusual hobbie? Try to stop him (it could certainly be seen as a violation oftheir rules after all)? But words wont stop him. His obsession will require equal tenacity to foil, if they even want to do so.

Perhaps Rebecca falls in the hands of Dauntain. He might certainly ask for help in that case, or he might not.

What if Rebecca is kithain as well?

The monster hunter, albeit obsessive, is hardly infallible. What ifsomeone else is hurt in his mission, or someone is wrongfully targeted, like a friend of the Oathcircle. They must either protect their friend with force or somehow prove his innocence, neither of which would be easy tasks.

Another option is to have this character as a sort of godfather like patron, especially if the characters or childlings or female. Perhpas one ofthe characters even reminds him of Rebecca?

This character could just as easily be the victim instead of a bystander, although that removes several of the story options mentioned above. But it adds several new ones, like can the character finally be healed of his or her psychic scares?

[A couple of comments from various feedback on the monster hunter. One, the concept doesn’t have to be male, and the relationship doesn’t have to be romantic in nature, it can be platonic. There doesn’t even have to be a relationship there, if necessary. Anything can serve as the catalyst for the Redcap’s path of vengeance. Technically, the individual doesn’t even have to be Redcap, but since it was thought up as a way to play Redcaps as something other than “Kill! Eat! Maim!” . . .]
