Interpreting Seelie and Unseelie

by Heather Varley

Okay, since we are working on the advanced version of this, here my take on the old argument about what exactly differentiates the Courts, and why I think certain Legacies are listed as Unseelie or Seelie.

The difference is *not* Good or Evil, as we all agree, Evil is easily seen in Duke Dray, who is Seelie to the point of choking, and Good is in a great many Unseelie who are *not* Shadow Court.

Therefore, some other quality must differentiate them. That quality is Other vs. Self orientation. Seelie are other-oriented, unselfish, while the Unseelie are self-absorbed. This is why the difference is often confused with Good and Evil, because society teaches us to value as Good Unselfishness and Selflessness and to deem Evil Selfishness and Self-absorbtion.

Therefore, the Seelie legacies have as their basic premise, the good of the many outweighs the good of the one, and the unspoken "end justifies the means". The Unseelie legacies are always looking out for number one, the good of the one, me, outweighs the good of anyone else.

Anyway, with this taken into account, can anyone come up with some more Legacies? Particularly Unseelie ones that aren't so annoying. Most of the newer ones I don't really like, and after a while Wretch and Peacock can get really boring.
