Living on a planet in a trinary star system, the Taresians have approximately the same technology level as Voyager. What sets this race apart is their method of reproduction. The planet presumably has a male to female ratio of 1 to 9 making male Taresians fairly rare.
Apparently the Taresians infect males of other species with a retro virus that over times transforms the victim into a full blooded Taresian. Included within the DNA of the retrovirus are a set of genetic memory engrams which give the infected host an uncontrollable urge to return to Taresia was well as giving him information on their language and enemies such as the Nasari.
Following the "return" of the new Taresian, he is initiated into a wedding ceremony where by he takes three Taresian women for wives. The ceremony is complicated and ends in the husband being bound (symbolizing his bond to his wives) and painted with a red dye mixture of unknown origin. The husband does not survive the ceremony as the Taresian reproductive process involves denucleation of the Males body to extract the DNA. The denucleation process is always fatal.
The Nasari are sworn enemies to the Taresians, newly infected or regular, and will attempt to destroy any vessel with Taresians aboard.
