The Tak Tak were first encountered by Captain Janeway and Neelix in 2373 when the two traveled to the Tak Tak homeworld for a trade mission. Janeway had difficulty with the unforgiving and impatient Tak Tak, who used a variety of odd gestures in addition to a spoken language. One of the worst insults in Tak Tak society was the placing of hands on hips, a gesture that an unsuspecting Janeway made during their time with the Tak Tak.
